This Week's Storylines
Garden State of Mind
After a stretch where Princeton played seven of eight games away from home, the Tigers return to Baker Rink for this weekend's non-league series against Alabama-Huntsville.
Last Time Out
Princeton was swept in league play at Cornell and Colgate. The Tigers lost 4-1 to the Big Red on Friday night and 3-2 to the Raiders on Saturday.
Road Warriors
Princeton has played only three of its 12 games on home ice. Of its next 11 games, eight will take place on home ice.
Coming Up on a Break
This weekend's games are the last for Princeton before the holiday break. The Tigers do not play again until just before the new year begins. Princeton then plays three-straight weekends during intercession before taking off for the exam break during the last two weeks of January.
The Series With Alabama-Huntsville
Princeton and Alabama-Huntsville met for the first time last fall and the teams played an offense-minded 5-5 tie. Princeton led for much of the game, but the Chargers kept fighting back to force overtime in the deadlock.
Scouting the Chargers
Alabama-Huntsville is 5-4-1 overall and 2-2 in league play to tie for third in College Hockey America. The Chargers enter the weekend after taking a win and a tie in a series at Ohio State last weekend. UAH also has wins this season against RIT, Niagara and Robert Morris. Alabama-Huntsville was chosen by the CHA coaches as the league's preseason favorite.
One Year Ago in Princeton
Then junior Patrick Neundorfer recorded his first collegiate hat trick in a 5-5 shootout at Baker Rink. UAH outshot Princeton 43-41, but found itself playing catch-up much of the night as Princeton had leads of 2-0, 3-2 and 5-3 before two late Charger goals forced overtime. Chris Martini had two goals for the Chargers in the game.
Princeton Out of Conference
Princeton is 1-1 this season in non-league games. The games came in the season-opening series at Notre Dame. Princeton won the opener 5-3 and fell the following night 2-0. Last year Princeton was 2-4-1 in non-league action.
Princeton vs. College Hockey America
The Tigers are 1-6-2 all-time against teams from College Hockey America but are unbeaten at home in those games. Princeton is 1-0-2 on home ice having beaten and tied Niagara, and tied Alabama-Huntsville. Princeton has losses to Bemidji State, Niagara and Wayne State. Princeton has played Air Force, before but it came before the Falcons joined the league. Princeton will play the league's sixth member, Robert Morris, on Jan. 31.
League vs. League
The ECAC Hockey League is 38-21-6 this season in non-league games. ECAC teams are 8-2-1 against teams from the CHA. Alabama-Huntsville has not faced another ECACHL team this season.
Commissioners' Cup
Saturday night's game will count towards the 2005-06 Commissioners' Cup standings. The cup is a 33-game series that features all six conferences. Each league has 11 games (five home, five road, one neutral site) and the conferences are ranked by their records in the specified games. The ECACHL won the first cup last season and are currently tied at the top of the standings this year. This marks the first Princeton game that has counted in the series.
Against Ranked Teams
Princeton is 0-4 this season against teams ranked in the nation's top 15. Three of the four losses have come by a single goal, most recently, Princeton's 3-2 loss on Saturday at Colgate.
Honor Roll
Junior Darroll Powe registered points in both games on the weekend and is the only Tiger carrying a point streak into this weekend. On Friday night he scored his first goal of the season, snapping a 16-game stretch dating back to last season. On Saturday, he assisted on the goal that gave Princeton a 1-0 lead late in the first period. He was selected to the ECACHL Honor Roll this weekend.
Hagel
Sophomore Kyle Hagel entered the season with two assists. This season he has five points, including points in four of his last six games. On Saturday at Colgate he scored to make the score 2-0 in the second period. Only junior Kevin Westgarth has points in as many games this season for the Tigers.
The Captain
Senior Patrick Neundorfer scored his second goal in three games on Saturday at Colgate. He has four this season.
Defensive Assists
The scoring on all three Princeton goals last weekend included assists to defensemen. Seniors Brian Carthas and Seamus Young assisted on the Darroll Powe goal at Cornell. Junior Daryl Marcoux was in one the scoring of Patrick Neundorfer's goal at Colgate, and junior Brett Westgarth created the turnover that resulted in Kyle Hagel's goal.
Polling Station
Princeton was picked to finish 10th by both the coaches and the media in the ECACHL preseason polls. Alabama-Huntsville was chosen first in the CHA preseason coaches poll.
