Princeton, N.J. - Freshman Keith Shattenkirk scored twice and sophomore Grant Goeckner-Zoeller had a goal and two assists as the Princeton men's hockey team defeated Dartmouth 6-2 Friday night at Baker Rink. Shattenkirk opened the scoring for the Tigers and then broke a 1-1 tie midway through the second as the Tigers snapped a six-game winless streak.
The win completed Princeton's season-sweep of Dartmouth as the Tigers posted a 3-0 win earlier this season in Hanover, N.H. Princeton is now 7-17-2 overall and 5-13-1 in the ECAC Hockey League. The Tigers moved into a 10th-place tie with Rensselaer in the standings. Dartmouth dropped to 14-10-2 overall and 10-8 in the league. Shattenkirk started things off early for the Tigers when he slapped home a pass from junior Dustin Sproat at 5:50. Off an offensive zone face-off win by sophomore Landis Stankievech, the puck went to sophomore Mike Moore at the point. Moore, making his first appearance in three weeks because of an injury fired a shot towards the net that was blocked. The puck caromed to Sproat who quickly fed it to Shattenkirk who buried it into the net for his second of the season.
Just over three minutes later Dartmouth answered on the power play. Mike Ouellette picked off a D-to-D pass at the Dartmouth blueline and went in alone on Princeton junior Eric Leroux. Leroux got a piece of Oullette's shot, but not enough as it slid by to knot the score at one.
Princeton reassumed the lead at 11:07 and never looked back. Junior Brian Carthas fed a pass to Shattenkirk who broke in on left side. Once he reached the left face-off dot, he lifted a backhander that beat Dartmouth's Sean Samuel on the shortside and gave the Tigers a 2-1 lead. Sophomore Daryl Marcoux also assisted on the goal.
Princeton outshot Dartmouth 13-7 in the opening period and took a 2-1 lead to the locker room.
Shots were even in the second period but only one goal was scored. The goal came just 1:04 into the period when good work down low caused a turnover that resulted in a Tiger goal. Senior Neil Stevenson-Moore provided the pressure and collected the puck behind the net. He fed it in front where junior Patrick Neundorfer attempted a pass across the crease to sophomore Darroll Powe on the doorstep. A Dartmouth stick however knocked the puck in the air, but Powe stuck with it and batted it by Samuel for his fifth goal of the season.
Dartmouth came out strong to begin the period, but a misplayed puck by Samuel 3:12 into the period resulted in a Tiger goal and a 4-1 Princeton lead. Sophomore Grant Goeckner-Zoeller carried the puck just over the Dartmouth blueline and dumped it on net looking for a change, but Samuel missed the puck and it bounced around him for Goeckner-Zoeller's sixth of the season. Senior Luc Paquin and sophomore Christian Read assisted on the goal.
Princeton made it 5-1 three minutes later when junior Mark Masters scored off an odd-man rush. Goeckner-Zoeller fed him a pass in front and he put it past Dan Yacey, on in relief of Samuel, for his third of the season. Junior Sebastian Borza assisted on the goal, the scored one of his own at 12:30 when Goeckner-Zoeller fed him a pass from behind the net.
Garret Overlock added a goal for Dartmouth late to reach the final score of 6-2. Dartmouth outshot the Tigers 16-7 in the final period, but was outscored 3-1 in the period. Dartmouth held the shot advantage at the end of the night 33-30.
Leroux made 31 saves for the Tigers for his fifth win of the season. Samuel took the loss and is now 5-4-1 on the season.
Princeton returns to action tomorrow night when Vermont visits Baker Rink at 7 p.m.
