Final Stats
Charlottesville, Va. - There was no unlucky 13 for Virginia's men's lacrosse team under the Klockner Stadium lights.
Third-ranked Virginia defeated No. 8 Princeton 11-7 Saturday night to improve to 13-0 all-time in night games at Klockner Stadium. The loss dropped Princeton to 0-2 on the season, while UVa improved to 4-0 as 2,323 chilled fans looked on.
"With the athletes that Virginia has, you know they're going to come after you," said Princeton coach Bill Tierney. "We didn't handle that as well as we could have, and you have to give Virginia a lot of credit."
Princeton defeated Virginia 8-7 a year ago for its first win in Charlottesville since 1994, and the Tigers then won at Charlottesville in the NCAA quarterfinals last May. The winning streak at UVa would stop at two, though, as the Cavs took the lead in the first half and never gave it back.
Virginia outshot Princeton 11-0 in the first quarter, but Dave Law made five saves to keep it scoreless. Freshman Bob Schneider then scored his first goal of the year 45 seconds into the second quarter to make it 1-0, and Princeton used a goal by Mike Gaudio to take its final lead at 2-1 midway through the quarter. UVA would score the final three of the first half to lead 4-2 at intermission, and John Christmas scored 19 seconds into the second half to build the lead to three.
Princeton twice cut it to two at 5-3 and 6-4, but Matt Poskay scored with 12 seconds remaining in the quarter to make it a three-goal game again. Princeton would get no closer after that.
Schneider would finish with two goals, while Scott Sowanick scored twice to push his team-best total to six on the year. Peter Trombino had a goal and two assists, while Jason Donger and Mike Gaudio also scored. "We played hard," Sowanick said. "It was a tough game, but we played through it. Sometimes it doesn't go your way. Virginia played a very good game."
Matt Ward had two goals and two assists to lead all scorers, while Poskay and Jared Little had two goals each. Christmas and Ben Rubeor, who was not expected to play after an ankle injury last week in a 12-11 win over Syracuse, had a goal and two assists.
Law made 10 saves for the Tigers. Sowanick, John Bennett and Michael Wenzel had four ground balls each.
Princeton is at Hofstra next Saturday (1:30, WHWH AM 1350, www.goprincetontigers.com).
