Kathleen Miller and Elizabeth Pillion each scored two goals in a 7-0 spurt that spanned halftime and seven different Tiger players scored goals as No. 3 Princeton used another strong second-half effort to defeat Columbia, 13-4, in the Ivy League women's lacrosse opener for both teams at Class of 1952 Stadium Tuesday evening.
Princeton (4-1, 1-0 Ivy), which had outscored Columbia (4-1, 0-1 Ivy) 118-14 in seven previous games against the Lions, found itself in a close game Tuesday night when Elyse Pultz scored for Columbia with 5:09 left in the first half to tie the game at 3-3. The Tigers still led just 7-3 midway through the second half before scoring three times in a three-minute span to break the game open.
The Tigers have now outscored their five opponents 29-12 in the second half after each of its five games have been ties, one-goal games or two-goal games at halftime.
"We don't want to be known as a second-half team," said Miller, who had a team-high three goals and added an assist for Princeton. "We have to play with the same kind of energy and passion right from the beginning."
"We didn't really have the kind of effort I would have liked to have seen coming off Saturday's game (an overtime loss to Penn State)," said Princeton head coach Chris Sailer. "It's nice to get a win, but there were too many unforced turnovers and missed opportunities."
Many of those missed opportunities came as a result of strong play from Columbia goalie Marcela Calidonio, who had 16 saves on Princeton's 38 shots. The Tigers had eight free-position opportunities but scored on just two of them. Princeton led 2-0 4:03 into the game thanks to goals in a 13-second span from Katie Lewis-Lamonica and Miller, and Biles then took a feed from Miller with 12:33 left in the first half to give Princeton a 3-0 lead.
But Columbia then began to control possession, getting on the board thanks to Katie Warner's free-position shot with nine minutes left in the half and pulling within 3-2 when leading scorer Carrie Anderer scored with 6:46 left.
After Pultz tied the game at 3-3 with five minutes left, Princeton got goals from Biles and freshman Ashley Amo late in the half to take a 5-3 lead into halftime. The Tigers extended to an insurmountable lead around the 10-minute mark of the second half when Pillion scored twice in a three-minute span and Mililer scored with 11:03 left to make it 10-3 Princeton.
Warner scored two goals for Columbia, which had 10 draw controls to nine for the Tigers but committed 21 turnovers.
Princeton outshot the Lions 22-8 in the decisive second half. The Tigers won their 15th straight Ivy League game at home and their 12th straight Ivy League game overall.
The third-ranked Tigers travel to fourth-ranked Virginia Saturday afternoon (1 p.m.).
