Lindsey Biles wasn't going to let Princeton be another victim of upset-minded Temple. And she certainly had the second half to prove it.
Biles had three goals and two assists in the second half, including a goal and two assists in a three-goal Princeton run that gave her team the lead for good, as the third-ranked Tigers held off the 16th-ranked Owls, 10-8, in a game played at the Class of 1952 Stadium Wednesday night.
Princeton (7-2) trailed 4-3 after Allison Frengs scored for Temple (4-3) 3:44 into the second half, but Biles' goal three minutes later tied the game. The senior attacker then had two key assists, one a feed to Ashley Amo to put the Tigers ahead for good with 21:21 left and another to Elizabeth Pillion for a goal that gave Princeton a 6-4 lead.
"I wasn't happy with the way I was playing in the first half and the team wasn't happy with the way we were playing," said Biles, who moved into fourth place alone all-time at Princeton with 146 career goals. "We all played with a lot more fire in the second half."
"We did a better job of playing together and as a team in the second half," said Princeton head coach Chris Sailer. "Temple has had some great results against good teams this year, so we knew our work would be cut out for us."
Patty Glavin's goal with 16:38 left on a free-position shot pulled Temple within 6-5, but Biles and Ingrid Goldberg then scored similar goals for Princeton after that, dodging from behind the net to the left side of the cage, to put the Tigers ahead 8-5. The Owls would again make it close, pulling within 8-7 with 5:56 left when Frengs scored twice on identical plays in a 39-second span, but Pillion's unassisted goal from behind the cage with 4:45 left and Biles' free-position goal with 2:55 on the clock put Princeton back ahead by three.
Temple, looking nothing like the team that lost at home to Princeton 19-6 last season, controlled much of the last 15 minutes of the first half after falling behind 2-1 on Pillion's goal with 17:29 on the clock. Corey Leader and Johna Capaldo scored in a 1:14 span midway through the half to give the Owls a 3-2 lead, and the Tigers were fortunate to tie the game 3-3 at halftime after Goldberg took a nice feed from Kathleen Miller with 36 seconds remaining.
Princeton got a strong performance in the cage from Sarah Kolodner, who had eight saves. The Tigers outshot Temple 27-19, but 16 of Temple's 19 shots were on goal.
Miller had two assists for Princeton, which defeated Temple for the seventh straight year.
Frengs scored three times for Temple, whle Capaldo had two goals and Glavin a goal and two assists.
