PRINCETON, N.J. The `Class of 2009' set to join the Princeton men's soccer team, includes three midfielders, two defenders and a goalkeeper from four neighboring states on the East Coast, that recently competed against one another to emerge among the top soccer clubs in the PDA Region 1 National Championship. These six student-athletes join a team that finished 8-5-4 a season ago and finished in a tie for second-place in the Ivy League. The six freshmen are: Jason Adams, Brian Brady, Matt Care, Pat Farrell, Brad Fechter and Joe Walter.
"We have another talented class joining Princeton Soccer in 2005 and this group will strengthen the Tigers in the goal, on defense and on attack," says head coach Jim Barlow. "In addition to being talented on the field, these student athletes have experience playing in big games with some of the best clubs on the East Coast. Many of them recently competed for the Region I Championships, and two of them (Walter and Fechter) advanced to the National Championships. The freshmen should all challenge for spots in the top group right away, while learning from a strong and experienced group of senior leaders. We expect them to make major contributions over the coming seasons."
Adams is a native of Wheeling, W.V., who was named a three-time All-State first team performer. Adams finished his high school career with 77 goals and 58 assists. He was named a NCAA/Adidas All-American and Player of the Year (W.V.) by five sources his senior year and added to the All-USA East list by the National College Soccer Scout. Adams anchored the Beadling Soccer Club (Pittsburgh, Pa.) that advanced to the Regional 1 Championships.
Brady is a graduate of Bethesda Chevy Chase High School. As a member of the 2001 Maryland State High School Champion soccer team, he led his team to the regional championships in 2002 and 2003. With three years of international experience, Brady led his Maryland ODP team to the Europa Cup (Austria) in the spring of 2004. Care was named both the 2004 Princeton Packet and Trenton Times Boys Soccer Player of the Year. A four-time all-state finisher and a first team all-MAPL qualifier for three years, Care was named the recipient of the Rob Myslik Award in 2004. Care is a member of the PSC Coppas club soccer team, who advanced to the Regional 1 semi-finals, this summer.
Another member of the Coppas is Farrell, who was captain of his William Penn Charter School team his junior and senior years. He was a three-time All-League performer and was named the MVP during his senior campaign. Farrell won the State Cup three times with the PSC Coppas and started for the Eastern Pennsylvania ODP team that earned the National ODP Title back in March. Farrell's sister, Meghan, plays on the women's soccer team at Princeton.
Fechter is a graduate of Pingry High School in Westfield, N.J., where he led his team to the Colonial Hills Conference Championship and a 19-1 team record. Fechter scored 12 goals and tallied 11 assists his senior year en route of an All-Conference first team and All-State honorable mention selection. He is a member of the PDA Conquistadors, who won the Region 1 Championships this past month and won the New Jersey State Championship the last three years.
Joe Walter is a goalkeeper from Montclair, N.J., where he graduated from Montclair Kimberley Academy. As a member of the PDA Conquistadors, he won the last three NJ State Championships and the 2005 Region Championship. In 2004, Walter was named the MVP of the State Championship game. In high school, Walter managed a 0.5 GAA his senior year and was a first team All-Conference honoree.
