Box Score
Yannick Rome Gosselin scored twice in a three-minute span early in the first half and Fairleigh Dickinson held off several Princeton scoring chances midway through the second half as the No. 7-ranked Knights defeated the Tigers, 2-1, in the Princeton Men's Soccer Invitational Saturday at Mercer County Community College.
Gosselin's goals came from similar distances but different plays. The first, in the 16th minute, came thanks to a long ball over the top of the defense from Pino Tubito. The second, just 3:23 later, came thanks to a short pass from Alejandro Bedoya near midfield.
Princeton (1-2) cut a 2-0 halftime deficit to 2-1 4:38 into the second half when Darren Spicer scored on a penalty kick after Ben Young was tripped in the FDU penalty area, but the Tigers couldn't get the equalizer.
"We started too slowly and had some loose plays in the back," said Princeton head coach Jim Barlow. "We didn't start playing well until the second half, and that's not good enough against a good team."
The Tigers best chances to tie the game at 2-2 came midway through the second half. Darren Spicer's header from inside the box just cleared the crossbar in the 69th minute, and Spicer had another chance eight minutes later that was saved by FDU goalie Tomer Chencinski. Princeton also had eight second-half corner kicks, including three in the final 10 minutes.
FDU (5-0) nearly made it 3-1 in the 73rd minute, but Princeton goalie Bobby Guelich came off his line to stop Nadav Gottesman's shot in the left side of the box. Both teams had 11 shots, while the Tigers had 11 corner kicks to just four for the Knights.
In the day's first game, ninth-ranked Akron defeated Loyola by a 2-1 score. Dino Campellone and Sinisa Ubiparipovic scored for the undefeated Zips midway through the second half to provide the margin of victory.
The Tigers play the No. 9 Zips Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m.
