Princeton's Andrew Lieu and Sratha Saengsuwarn each won two matches Friday to advance to the quarterfinals of the "Open" singles bracket at the 37th annual Farnsworth/Princeton Invitational at the Lenz Tennis Center.
Lieu, a senior, beat No. 8 seed Nic Brunner of Cornell in the first round in straight sets, 7-6 and 6-2, before defeating Penn's Brendan O'Gara in a three-set match later in the day. Lieu dominated the third set in that match, winning 6-1.
Saengsuwarn, a junior, had a straight-set win over Tyler Deming in the morning before winning a three-set match against Yale's Jeff Dawson. Saengsuwarn and Dawson split 6-4 sets before the Princeton junior won the third set 6-2.
Lieu and Saengsuwarn will play the top two seeds in the bracket Saturday morning. Lieu will meet Penn's Jason Pinsky, the top seed, while Saengsuwarn will meet Pinsky's teammate, Mikhail Bekker, the No. 2 seed.
The Tigers also had three players reach the round of eight in the 32-player "B" singles bracket. Freshman Alex Vuckovic and Alex Krueger-Wyman each endured tough three-set matches in the Round of 16 to advance to the final eight, while sophomore Andrew Husby reached the quarterfinals thanks to straight-set wins over Rutgers' Matt Fawcett and St. Joseph's Chris Spencer.
In the doubles "A" bracket the Tigers top doubles team, Lieu and classmate Hans Plukas, won a first-round match to advance to the quarterfinals. Plukas and Lieu are the No. 2 seed in the bracket. Quarterfinal and semifinal action takes place Saturday at the Lenz Tennis Center, with finals taking place on Sunday.
