GARDEN CITY, N.Y. - Darren Spicer collected a rebound of a Ben Young cross off the goalkeeper and scored for Princeton 7:44 into the first overtime period, giving the Tigers a 1-0 victory over Adelphi in a men's soccer game played at Stiles Field Saturday afternoon.
Princeton (3-3), which won its second straight game and its third road game in as many attempts this year, scored after the Panthers were called for offside just thirty seconds earlier in the Princeton end.
Spicer, who has now scored his team's last three goals, also had an opportunity to win the game for Princeton in the final minute of regulation, but Adelphi goalkeeper Michael Hurley was there for the save after Spicer's shot on a corner-kick situation.
Adelphi (1-6-1) saw its winless streak extend to seven games after a season-opening victory Sept. 2. The Tigers defeated the Panthers for the sixth consecutive time dating back to 1997.
Princeton outshot the Panthers 6-5 in a defensive-minded game that saw the teams combine for 38 fouls. Both Hurley and Princeton goalie Bobby Guelich had two saves.
Spicer now has 23 career goals for Princeton, 10th all-time in program history.
Guelich's saves came on a Dieudonne Nonga header attempt with 15 minutes left in the first half and a Rob Philippou header with 30 minutes left in the game. The senior earned his second straight shutout.
Princeton hosts Rutgers Wednesday night at Lourie-Love Field at 7 p.m. The game will be televised on a tape-delayed basis by Patriot 8.
