CHARLOTTESVILLE - The Princeton wrestling team improved to 5-2 and advanced to the semifinals of the American College Division of the Virginia Duals by topping Anderson College 25-9 Friday morning. The win sends third-seeded Princeton into a semifinal showdown Saturday with second-seeded SUNY-Brockport, one of the nation's premier Division III programs.
Anderson, currently ranked 20th in Division III, could have built a lead in the lowerweights, but Princeton got some timely points from those matches and built itself a 9-0 lead. Freshman Robert Benitez earned a 5-3 win at 125 pounds, and classmate Danny Scotton won a 15-10 offensive showdown against Nick DiCarlo. The experience of Eric Marcotulli was key in a 3-1 win at 141 pounds, and fellow veteran Andrew Iannuzzi followed that with a 10-0 major decision of his own.
At that point, Princeton led 13-0, but Anderson got on the board when Herb Porter edged Jesse Palermo 5-4 at 157 pounds. Marty Everin got those three points back with a 6-4 win at 165 pounds, and Matt DeNichilo earned Princeton's biggest-scoring win with a technical fall at 174 pounds.
Senior 197-pounder Jake Butler finished Princeton's scoring with a 16-3 win at 197 pounds. Of Princeton's three losses, two were by one point and one was by three points. Princeton will face SUNY-Brockport at 2 p.m. If the Tigers win, they will compete in the American College Division championship match at 8 p.m. against either top-seeded South Dakota State or unseeded Duquesne.
