Princeton senior men's soccer player Darren Spicer, the 2004 Ivy League Player of the Year and a two-time first-team All-Ivy selection, was chosen by Chivas USA with the first pick of the second round of the 2006 Major League Soccer (MLS) Supplemental Draft on Thursday.
Spicer was chosen 13th overall in the Supplemental Draft, which features selections from a supplemental list in addition to those players not selected in last week's MLS SuperDraft. Chivas USA, which plays its home games in Carson, Calif., is coached by former Princeton head coach and player Bob Bradley '80.
The 5-11, 170-lb. Spicer, a Southern California native who will graduate from Princeton in 2006 with a degree in politics, participated in the adidas/MLS Player Combine earlier this month.
"Darren is hard-working person on and off the field who had a great career at Princeton," says Princeton head coach Jim Barlow. "He did very well at the combine and we are excited that he has gotten this opportunity."
Spicer finished 10th all-time at Princeton with 26 career goals. He led the Tigers with seven goals and 17 points in 2005 and was a first-team All-Ivy selection.
In 2004, Spicer became just the third Princeton player to be named Ivy League Player of the Year in men's soccer, joining Barlow in 1990 and Mike Nugent in 2001. He led the Ivy League and the Tigers with 12 goals and 25 points and scored at least two goals in four games.
He also led the Tigers in scoring in 2003 and was second on the team in 2002 as a freshman.
Spicer is the third Tiger player to be drafted by the MLS in the past four years. Matt Behncke '02 was selected in the second round by Dallas in 2002 and Nugent was selected by the Chicago Fire that same year.
