Matheson, Capital Tigers Lead Women's Soccer to 3-0 Win at American
October 17, 2006 | Women's Soccer
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Just a Metro ride from their hometowns, sophomore Jen Om and freshman Vicki Anagnostopoulos made sure they had productive, if rainy, afternoons for the Princeton women's soccer team at American Tuesday.
In the game's first seven minutes, Om, from across the Potomac River in Fairfax, Va., had a goal and an assist as the Tigers (5-7-1) snapped a four-game losing streak in their final non-league match with a 3-0 win. It was Princeton's fifth shutout of the season and first since Sept. 19 against Lehigh.
Seventy-five seconds into the contest, Om passed ahead to Princeton's leading scorer, Diana Matheson, who fired from the corner of the 18-yard box and found plenty of nylon to give Princeton its first lead since Sept. 27 against Loyola (Md.).
Five minutes later, Anagnostopoulos, from Silver Spring, Md., found Om near the same spot where Matheson scored her goal. Similar shot, same result and Princeton was ahead 2-0.
Matheson added another goal with 13:51 left in the game taking a pass ahead from Anagnostopoulos, making a nice move around her defender in the 18 and knocking it home for a 3-0 lead and her team-best seventh goal of the season. Her 18 points also lead the team.
Princeton outshot American 11-8, with freshman Lauren Thomas' four leading the team. The Tiger strikers forced American keeper Alison Doyle to make four saves, while Tiger netminder Maren Dale needed to make three.
Princeton will return to Ivy League play Saturday at 7 p.m. against Harvard at Lourie-Love Field. It will be an unofficial Princeton-Harvard Day around the athletic campus as football will take on the Crimson at noon while the schools' field hockey teams will meet up at the same time. Before the women's soccer team meets Harvard, the two men's teams will begin at 4 p.m.
