October 03, 2006 | Men's Ice Hockey
PRINCETON -- A pair of Princeton grads, Jeff Halpern '99 and George Parros '03, have been named to the opening night rosters for their respective National Hockey League teams. Both players will continue their careers in new places this season with Halpern now playing in Dallas and Parros playing in Colorado. The pair could face one another as early as Wednesday night when Dallas visits Colorado at 10 p.m. on VERSUS.
Halpern signed a four-year contract to continue his National Hockey League career with the Dallas Stars. Halpern had 11 goals and a career-high 33 assists in 70 games for the Washington Capitals last season, when he served as their captain. He will wear the assistant captain's 'A' in Dallas, likely playing between Brendan Morrow and Eric Lindros on the Stars' checking line.
A four-year letterwinner and three-time team MVP at Princeton, Halpern ranks first on the school's career games played list, third on the career points list (141) and career assists list (81) and tied for fifth on the career goals list (60). After graduating in 1998, he signed with Washington as a free agent on March 30, 1999.
Over his seven-year NHL career, Halpern has 87 goals and 127 assists in 438 contests.
Parros became the seventh Tiger to skate in the NHL last season when he appeared in 55 games for the Los Angeles Kings. He had five points in 55 games, and also had 138 penalty minutes. Parros was placed on waivers by Los Angeles on the final day of training camp, but was promptly picked up by Colorado and named to their opening night roster.
Parros was a four-year letterwinner at Princeton and served as the team's captain as a senior. Parros recorded 20 goals and 32 assists for 52 points in the Orange and Black. He was drafted by Los Angeles in the eighth round of the 1999 NHL Entry Draft.
Several other Princeton grads have signed on to play professionally in the minor leagues and in Europe. Stay tuned to GoPrincetonTigers.com for a complete list of Princetonians playing professionally as those seasons begin.
