Late Free Kick Goal Gives St. John's 1-0 Win over Men's Soccer
October 04, 2006 | Men's Soccer
After missing a golden opportunity just a few minutes earlier, the St. John's men's soccer team took advantage of an unusual play to hand Princeton a loss at Lourie-Love Field Wednesday night.
Patrik Engstrom looked like he was trying to bend a long free kick to a teammate at the far post. Instead, Engstrom's long ball curled into the right-hand corner of the net with just 2:53 left in regulation, giving the Red Storm a 1-0 win over the Tigers.
Less than five minutes earlier, the Red Storm had a penalty kick chance when Rory Quinn was pulled down in the box, but Georgios Spanos' shot climbed well over the crossbar.
The game began at its scheduled time of 7:30 but was suspended with 23:11 left in the first half due to lightning. After a period of lightning and heavy rain, the game resumed approximately an hour later.
Princeton (5-4-2), which saw its two-game winning streak come to an end, had terrific scoring chances on two of its five shots in the game. The first came with just less than two minutes left in the first half, when Kyle McHugh's close shot got through the initial dive from St. John's goalie Jason Landers. The Red Storm (7-3-2) was then able to clear the ball away.
Brad Fechter then had a nice chance for Princeton on a long left-footed shot midway through the second half, but Landers dove to his right to tip the ball over the crossbar.
St. John's outshot the Tigers 10-5, including 7-2 in the second half. Engstrom nearly had a goal for the Red Storm with 16 minutes left in the second half, but his header from inside the box just cleared the crossbar.
Both Landers and Oppenheimer had three saves in goal.
The teams were playing for just the second time overall and the first time since the 1995 season.
Princeton plays an Ivy League game against Brown Saturday night at Lourie-Love Field (7 p.m.).
