Two Late Goals Lift Brown Over Men's Soccer in Overtime, 2-1
October 07, 2006 | Men's Soccer
PRINCETON, N.J. -- Princeton junior Robbie Morgenroth was less than 10 minutes from having his first career goal be the one that lifted the Tiger men's soccer team (5-5-2, 1-2-0 Ivy) over 21st-ranked Brown Saturday night at Lourie-Love Field. The Bears had other plans, getting the tying goal in the 81st minute and the winning goal in the 97th minute to escape Old Nassau with a 2-1 win.
It is the sixth straight one-goal game for the Tigers, including all three Ivy contests. Brown rises to 8-1-1 overall and 2-0-1 in league play, two points behind first-place Penn, which was an overtime winner over Columbia Saturday.
Morgenroth rocketed a shot from near the perimeter of the 18-yard box straight on and into the back of the net in the sixth minute. The Tigers played excellent defense for the next 75 minutes, fending off near-miss after corner kick from Brown to keep the Bears off the board and the upset bid alive.
Unfortunately for the Orange and Black, a good bounce came Brown's way as Dylan Sheehan, on the ground near the left post, pushed a loose ball across the goal line to tie the game with 9:40 to play.
Princeton limited Brown for the rest of regulation, but the Bears roared again in the first extra period. With 3:42 before the intra-overtime break, Ben Brackett sent a crossing ball to Rhett Bernstein in front of the net. Bernstein headed it straight to the back of the net, and Brown survived the scare.
Shots were even at 8-8 as Princeton keeper Joe Walter made one save to David Semenza's two for Brown.
The Tigers will take to the field again Tuesday against Seton Hall before returning to Ivy play next Saturday at 7 p.m. at Columbia.
