Hare Ends Overtime Quickly, Gives Men's Soccer 3-2 Win over Seton Hall
October 10, 2006 | Men's Soccer
Max Hare became the 11th Princeton player to score a goal this season when he gave Princeton the lead in the first half against Seton Hall Tuesday night. Then he became the first Princeton player this season to give the Tigers an overtime win.
Hare took the ball away from Seton Hall goalie Paul McHenry near the top of the box and scored into an open net just 56 seconds into overtime, giving the Tigers a 3-2 win over the Pirates at Lourie-Love Field.
"It was great to get the first one, but the second one was obviously more important," said Hare. "They both came from just working hard and not from anything fancy."
Princeton (6-5-2), which defeated Seton Hall (7-6-1) for the first time since the 2001 season, trailed 2-1 in the final minutes of regulation but tied the game with five minutes left on a nice set piece. Brian Brady's corner kick found Devin Muntz in the box, and Muntz headed the ball past McHenry to tie the game.
"We got some special plays tonight when we needed them," said Princeton head coach Jim Barlow. "I'm happy that we were able to send it to overtime and happier that we were able to finish the game."
The Tigers had previously lost in overtime twice this season, including a 2-1 defeat against Brown just four days ago at Lourie-Love Field.
Hare's first-half goal, in the 16th minute, was a result of some nice play from Matt Kontos and Kyle McHugh. Kontos sent a long ball from just inside midfield to McHugh, whose header was saved by McHenry. But Hare was there to send the rebound into an open net for a 1-0 Princeton lead.
Seton Hall tied the game just 1:14 before halftime. Eliseo Giusfredi rifled a shot that Princeton goalie Joe Walter saved, but John Raus was there to collect the rebound and tie the game at the half.
Raus put Seton Hall ahead in the 69th minute. He took a long shot from outside the box that deflected off a Princeton defender, and the deflection was enough to send the ball over Walter's head and into the net.
Walter had a season-high nine saves for the Tigers, who were outshot 16-14. He had eight of those saves in the first half when Seton Hall had an 11-6 shots advantage.
Princeton ended a two-game losing streak with the win. The Tigers conclude their regular season with four straight Ivy League games, beginning Saturday night at Columbia (7 p.m.)
