Saiontz Wins Championship in "A" Flight at USTA Women's Collegiate Invitational
October 09, 2006 | Women's Tennis
Princeton freshman Melissa Saiontz recorded a 6-4, 6-3 victory over South Carolina's Ana Marija Zubori Monday morning to win the "A" flight singles championship at the USTA Women's Collegiate Invitational at the USTA's Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.
Saiontz is the first Princeton player to win an "A" flight singles bracket since Kavitha Krishnamurthy '03 won three events in the fall of 1999.
The highest-ranked American player to enter the collegiate ranks in 2006, Saiontz won all five of her singles matches at the tournament in straight sets. She defeated Brown's Daisy Ames and Boston College's Dasha Cherkasov on Saturday to advance to the quarterfinals, then beat Penn's Yulia Rivelis and Texas A&M's Else Potgeiter on Sunday to advance to Monday's final.
Saiontz, a Miami, Fla., native, also advanced to the semifinals of the "A" singles flight at Penn's Cissie Leary Invitational earlier this season. She also played in the ITA All-American pre-qualifying tournament last weekend in Los Angeles.
