Women's Soccer Meets Penn Saturday Seeking 10th Straight Winning Season
November 01, 2006 | Women's Soccer
PRINCETON, N.J. -- On a three-game winning streak, the Princeton women's soccer team will look to make it 10 winning seasons in a row and finish in the Ivy League's first division when it meets Penn Saturday at 4 p.m.
Last time out
Princeton extended its winning streak to three with a 1-0 win at Cornell last Saturday. Sarah Peteraf's second goal of the season came in the 79th minute, helping to deliver the win. The victory evened Princeton's record at 7-7-1 overall.
Playing for a winning season
After standing at 4-7-1 overall just a few weeks ago, Princeton had to win all of its remaining games to finish with a winning record. The Tigers are one win away from doing just that and extending their winning-season streak into a 10th year.
Senior Day
Princeton will honor its three seniors, Christina Costantino, Amanda Ferranti and Meghan Farrell, prior to the game. The Class of 2007 were sophomores when the Tigers advanced to the NCAA College Cup semifinals in 2004.
All-time series
Princeton leads the all-time series with Penn 14-5-1 and has won two in a row. At home, Princeton has won three straight, going without a loss since 1998, and is 9-1 all-time at Lourie-Love Field against the Quakers.
A good helper
Princeton's Diana Matheson had seven assists in each of her first two seasons and has five this year for a career total of 19. That's one off the school record set by Kathleen Kobler in 1990 when she closed her career with 20.
Wins watch
Princeton head coach Julie Shackford earned her 132nd win as the Tiger mentor at Cornell last Saturday. She has been the all-time winningest women's head coach at Princeton since 2000, and next season she could become the wins leader between the men's and women's programs. Jimmy Reed had 136 wins from 1938-66.
Penn's fresh freshman
Penn freshman Jessica Fuccello, the reigning Ivy League Rookie of the Week after Princeton's Vicki Anagnostopoulos won the week before, has nine of Penn's 24 goals. That's good enough for second in the Ivy League.
First-division Tigers
After losing its first four Ivy League games, Princeton's back-to-back wins have the Tigers in position to finish as high as fourth in the Ivy. A win would give Princeton nine standings points, and if Brown ties or beats Yale Saturday, the Orange and Black would land in the league's upper half.
Penn-Princeton Day
The women's soccer game closes out four Penn-Princeton events on the Princeton campus over the weekend. Friday night, field hockey battles the Quakers, while football and men's soccer go at 1 p.m. Saturday.
Anagnostopoulos goes national
Princeton freshman Vicki Anagnostopoulos was recently named to the SoccerBuzz National Elite Team of the Week and was the SoccerTimes National Player of the Week after scoring 10 points in two games. She tied school records with four goals and eight points against Harvard Oct. 21. That followed two assists at American Oct. 17.
Shutting 'em out
Princeton goalkeeper Maren Dale and the Tiger defense have put together seven shutouts this season and three straight, a game-minutes span of 303:13. Shutouts have been a common occurrence for Tiger teams in the Julie Shackford era, as the program has held its opponents scoreless 75 times in the past 10 seasons with a program-record 13 in 2000.
Tigers race for the cure
Members of the Princeton women's soccer program competed in the New Jersey Race for the Cure, sponsored by the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, last Sunday in Princeton. Melissa Whitley finished ninth in the 5K race.
