November 11, 2006 | Men's Ice Hockey
POTSDAM, N.Y. -- The Princeton men's hockey team opened an early lead and stayed a goal ahead of Clarkson all night as the Tigers picked up their first win of the season with a 3-2 win at Clarkson on Saturday afternoon.
Princeton scored the only goal of the opening period when sophomore Brett Wilson notched his first goal of the season while the teams were skating four aside. Senior Grant Goeckner-Zoeller picked off a Clarkson pass and went in on the Clarkson goal on a breakaway. Kyle McNulty made the original save but Wilson trailed the play and jumped on the rebound to put Princeton ahead.
The Tigers made the lead 2-0 44 seconds into the second period when junior Kyle Hagel scored his second goal of the season. Sophomore Lee Jubinville stripped the puck away from Clarkson along the wall and fed Hagel for the second Princeton goal.
Clarkson cut the lead in half at 4:03 of the second period when David Cayer worked the puck to Mike Sullivan who scored on the backhand.
Princeton added the final goal of the period, the eventual game winner, when freshman Tyler Beachell scored his first career goal at 14:26. Senior Darroll Powe and freshman Mark Magnowski, who both had points in last night's game at St. Lawrence, set up Beachell's goal.
Princeton freshman netminder earned his first career win by making 17 saves. Kyle McNulty made 20 saves for Clarkson.
Princeton is now 1-4-1 on the season and won a game by a goal after losing its last four games by a single goal. The win was Princeton's first at Clarkson since Nov. 14, 1998. Princeton had been 2-33 all-time at Clarkson prior to this afternoon's game.
