This Week's Storylines
Dropping the Puck on the League Season
The Princeton men's hockey team opens up its 2006-07 league schedule with games this weekend at Rensselaer and Union. The game are the first of four-straight league games away from home.
Last Weekend
The Tigers opened the 2006-07 season with a tie and a loss in a two-game set against Bentley. Princeton jumped to a 3-0 lead in both games, but Bentley rallied to earn a tie in this first game and came back to win the following night.
Three-By-Three
Including Princeton's exhibition game against McGill, the Tigers have played three times this season and have scored three goals in each game.
Speaking of Threes
Senior captain Darroll Powe and freshman Mark Magnowski each recorded three points in last weekends games. Both players had a goal and two assists for the weekend. Senior Grant Goeckner-Zoeller was the other Tiger to record points in both games, tallying one point in each.
Too Close for Comfort
Dating back to last season, nine of Princeton's last 12 games have been decided by a goal or ended in a tie, including both games this season. Princeton is 1-5-3 in those nine games. Six of those games have gone to overtime and Princeton is 0-3-3 in those games. A tie with Rensselaer and an overtime loss to Union late last season are included in that span.
The Series With Rensselaer
Princeton and Rensselaer have met 88 times with the Engineers holding a 55-24-9 series edge. The Engineers are 34-12-5 at home in the series and took three of four points from the Tigers last season. Princeton, however, is 2-1-1 in its last four meetings with RPI.
Scouting the Engineers
Rensselaer is 2-1-2 in its first season under new head coach Seth Appert. The Engineers opened the season by tying Boston University, then split a pair of games at Denver, before winning the Governor's Cup Tournament last weekend by tying Union and beating Colgate. Those two games do not count towards the ECAC Hockey League standings.
A Season Ago
Last year RPI took three of four points from Princeton, winning 4-1 at home in November, and tying 4-4 in Princeton in February. The first game was tied 1-1 in the third before Rensselaer jumped ahead late, while the second games a back-and-forth affair that saw Rensselaer rally from being down 4-2 in the third period to forge the tie.
The Series With Union
Princeton is 17-14-4 all-time against Union, but trails the series 8-6-3 at Union. The Dutchmen carry a five-game unbeaten streak in the series (0-4-1) into this weekend, and swept the Tigers last season, winning 6-2 at home and 5-4 in overtime late in the season.
Scouting the Dutchmen
Union is 2-2-2 on the season but is winless in four games. The Dutchmen opened the season by sweeping Ferris State on the road, then have gone 0-2-2 with losses to Northeastern and Quinnipiac and ties against RIT and Rensselaer. The games against RPI and Quinnpiac at the Governor's Cup tournament do not count towards league standings.
A Season Ago
Union swept the Tigers a season ago. In the first game of the season between the two, Princeton scored twice in the second period to erase a 2-0 Union lead, but Dutchmen goals late in the period gave Union a lead in an eventual 6-2 win. Late in the season at Princeton, the Tigers rallied to take a 4-3 lead but Union tied the game with an extra-attacker goal and scored the game winner in overtime.
Special Teams
Princeton scored all three of its goals on Saturday night on the power play. Three of Bentley's four goals were scored when Bentley had the man advantage.
Immediate Impact
Four Tiger freshmen appeared in both games last weekend and responded with points. Brad Schroeder and Mark Magnowski scored goals in their collegiate debuts, while Dan Bartlett and Jody Pederson notched assists the following night. Magnowski led the group with three points. Four other freshmen appeared over the weekend.
Balanced Output
Princeton's 17 points over the weekend were spread among 11 different players, led by Darroll Powe and Mark Magnowski with three each. The six goals came from six different goal scorers.
Getting Things Going
Princeton saw its first competitive action of the season with an exhibition win on Oct. 20 against McGill University. The teams played a tight game that the Tigers won 3-2 in overtime.
Winning in Overtime
Princeton's overtime win against McGill was the Tigers' first win in the last 23 overtime games it has played. While it was an overtime game winner, because it was an exhibition game, it does not snap the stretch, which goes back to a 2-1 win over Yale on Nov. 20, 2001. Last Friday's game with Bentley moved the streak to 24 games. That span includes games against Rensselaer and Union last season.
Shorthanded Score
Senior Grant Goeckner-Zoeller scored Princeton's first goal in the McGill game while killing a Tiger penalty. The goal was Princeton's first shorthanded goal in more than a season as Princeton did not score a shorthanded goal last season. Senior Darroll Powe (against American International) and junior Landis Stankievech (at Cornell) scored shorthanded goals in the 2004-05 season.
Season Openers
With Princeton's season-opening 3-3 tie with Bentley. The Tigers are now 57-42-5 all-time in season-opening games. That includes a 36-21-2 record at home, a 10-12-0 record on the road and now an 11-9-3 record at neutral sites.
Home Openers
Princeton is 43-33-4 in its first home game of a season. Princeton lost its home opener 4-3 to Bentley this season.
Around the ECACHL
This weekend marks the first full weekend of league games this season. All 12 teams will be involved in league action on Friday and Saturday nights. The complete schedule can be found on Page 2 of these notes.
Scoring More…
Princeton has scored 81 goals in each of the past two seasons. Last season the Tigers did it despite the graduation of two of its top-three scorers from the previous season. That number is 19 more than the total of 62 that Princeton scored in 31 games two seasons ago.
and Allowing Less…
Princeton allowed 96 goals last season, the lowest goals against total for Princeton in almost 40 years. The 1968-69 Tiger squad allowed 95 goals.
Polling Station
Princeton was picked to finish 10th by both the coaches and the media in the ECACHL preseason polls for the second straight season. The Tigers finished ninth in the ECAC Hockey League standings a season ago.
On the Horizon
Princeton continues its run of game in New York State next weekend when it visits St. Lawrence and Clarkson next weekend. The Tigers return home the following weekend to host Cornell and Colgate.
