This Week's Storylines
Flying South
The Princeton men's hockey team makes its longest trip of the 2006-07 season this weekend when it flies south to Alabama for a pair of games at Alabama-Huntsville. UAH is Division I hockey's southernmost destination.
Last Weekend
Princeton took three of four points on the road last weekend against Ivy and ECACHL rivals Dartmouth and Harvard. The Tigers tied the Big Green 3-3 on Friday before picking up a 4-2 win at Harvard on Saturday.
Too Close for Comfort
Dating back to last season, 15 of Princeton's last 18 games have been decided by a goal or ended in a tie, including all eight of 10 games this season. Princeton is 2-9-4 in those 15 games. Eight of those games have gone to overtime and Princeton is 0-5-3 in those games including its 3-3 at Dartmouth on Friday. Saturday's game was a two-goal Princeton win, but the final goal was scored into an empty net.
The Series With Alabama-Huntsville
Princeton and Alabama-Huntsville have played each other three times, with all three games coming in the last two seasons and being played in Princeton. The series is knotted up with each team winning once, and earning a tie. The series began on Oct. 30, 2005 when the teams tied 5-5. A season later, the teams played a two-game series with the Chargers winning the opener 4-2 and Princeton taking the second game 4-0.
Scouting the Chargers
Alabama-Huntsville is 3-8-1 overall and 2-4-0 in College Hockey America this season. The Chargers have league wins over Wayne State and Robert Morris and a non-conference win against Army. The Chargers have not played since Nov. 18 when they won at Robert Morris 7-2. That win snapped a three-game losing skid.
Recent History
All three games between Princeton and Alabama-Huntsville have come within the last two seasons. The series opened in October 2004 when UAH scored twice late to forge a 5-5 tie at Princeton. Princeton's Patrick Neundorfer scored a hat trick in that game. Game 2 in the series saw UAH once again rally as the Chargers erased a 2-0 Princeton lead with a late second period goal and three in the third period to win 4-2 despite 50 shots on goal for Princeton. The Tigers even the series the following night as Grant Goeckner-Zoeller had a goal and two assists and Eric Leroux earned the shutout in a 4-0 Princeton win.
Princeton's Non-League Schedule
Princeton is 0-1-1 in non-league play this season as the Tigers opened the year with a tie and loss to Bentley. Princeton opened 3-0 leads in both games before the Falcons rallied. Last season Princeton was 3-4-0 in non-league play, defeating UAH, Notre Dame and Denver. In addition to this weekend, the Tigers have non-league games remaining with Nebraska-Omaha, Minnesota State and Robert Morris.
Princeton vs. the CHA
Princeton is 2-8-2 all-time against College Hockey America, picking up wins against Niagara in 2000 and Alabama-Huntsville in 2005. Princeton's two ties also came against Niagara and Alabama-Huntsville. Princeton is 0-5 in games against CHA opponents on the road, losing twice at Bemidji State, twice at Niagara and once at Robert Morris.
ECACHL vs. CHA
Teams from the ECACHL and the CHA have met 13 times this season with the ECACHL holding an 8-5-0 edge in those meetings. The ECACHL is 6-3-0 against the CHA at home, 1-0-0 in games at CHA rinks and 1-2-0 at neutral sites. Niagara has three of the league's wins, while Wayne State has the other two.
Leaving on a Jet Plane
Princeton has won its last two games immediately following a flight, winning games last season at Notre Dame and Denver. Unfortunately the Tigers were not so lucky the next night of both trips, falling to Notre Dame and Boston College.
Three-Point Weekend
Princeton earned a win and a tie on the road last weekend for its first three-point weekend of the season. Princeton's last three-point weekend came the final weekend of the 2005-06 season when the Tigers tied Brown and won at Yale. Princeton last took three points in a weekend set from Harvard and Dartmouth at the conclusion of the 1982-83 season. That stat excludes the seasons from 1991-92 through 2004-05 when Harvard and Brown were travel partners and Dartmouth and Vermont were travel partners.
Uncanny Success
Harvard's Bright Hockey Center has been friendly to the Tigers over the last 11 seasons as the Tigers are 6-3-2 at Harvard since the 1996-97 season. Princeton is 5-5-0 at home against Harvard in that span.
Dartmouth's Number
Princeton has had Dartmouth's number over the past three seasons, posting a 3-1-1 record in its last five games with the Big Green. Princeton was winless against Dartmouth in the previous three seasons.
Away From Home
This weekend's games end a stretch where Princeton will have played nine of 12 games away from home to start the season. Beginning next weekend, Princeton has five consecutive home games.
Success on the Road
Princeton is 2-3-2 in games away from Baker Rink this season and 0-3-0 in games at Baker Rink.
Coming From Behind
Princeton came from behind both nights to earn points on the road at Dartmouth and Harvard. On Friday Princeton trailed 2-0 and 3-1 before forging a tie, while on Saturday the Tigers trailed 2-0 less than five minutes into the game.
Special Teams
Fourteen of Princeton's 30 goals this season have come on special teams. Last weekend the Tigers scored three goals on the power play, all at Harvard. The Tigers have 12 power-play goals and two shorthanded goals this season.
Lots of Shots
Princeton outshot both Dartmouth and Harvard this weekend, making it nine of 10 games this season that the Tigers have garnered more shots than their opponent. Last season Princeton outshot its opponents in 13 of 31 games and did not reach their ninth game of outshooting an opponent until the final day of January and had only outshot three opponents at this point last season.
Seven for Number 6
Lee Jubinville's point-scoring streak was snapped at seven games on Saturday at Harvard. Jubinville's streak was the longest for Princeton this season and included eight points in seven games.
On His Heels
While Jubinville's streak stopped at Harvard, Darroll Powe's point-scoring streak reached six games with goals at Dartmouth and Harvard last weekend. Powe also claimed the team lead in points and goals when he scored the game winner at Harvard.
Who Would Have Thought?
Trailing 3-1 at Dartmouth on Friday, the Tigers got scoring from two unlikely sources. First Brandan Kushniruk made the score 3-2 on his first goal in 363 days since scoring at Quinnipiac last Thanksgiving weekend. That goal was set up by Max Cousins, who broke his 42-game goalless streak with the game-tying goal in the third period.
Weekly Honors
Zane Kalemba was Princeton's representative on the ECACHL Honor Roll this weekend as the freshman backstopped Princeton to a win and a tie on the road. Kalemba stopped 48 of 53 shots over the weekend and lowered his goals-against average to 2.59.
Career Firsts
Cam MacIntyre became the sixth Princeton player to score his first career goal this season. He scored the second Tiger goal on Saturday at Harvard and became the 19th Tiger to register a point this year.
Immediate Impact
Princeton's freshman class has had an immediate impact. Seven of the nine skaters have recorded a point and six of those have scored goals.
Scoring More…
Princeton has scored 81 goals in each of the past two seasons. Last season the Tigers did it despite the graduation of two of its top-three scorers from the previous season. That number is 19 more than the total of 62 that Princeton scored in 31 games two seasons ago. Princeton is on pace to score 93 goals this year.
Around the ECACHL
There are two league series' this weekend. RPI and Union visit Cornell and Colgate, and Clarkson and St. Lawrence travel to Yale and Brown. Princeton is the only league team playing non-league games this weekend.
On the Horizon
Princeton returns home to complete the first half of the schedule next weekend when Union and Rensselaer visit Baker Rink. Princeton lost to both in overtime earlier this season. Princeton then is off for 20 days before hosting Nebraska-Omaha on Dec. 29.
