Rensselaer Stops Princeton Rally With Overtime Win
November 03, 2006 | Men's Ice Hockey
TROY, N.Y. -- The Princeton men's hockey team rallied from a 3-1 deficit to force overtime, but Seth Klerer's goal in waning seconds of overtime lifted Rensselaer to a 4-3 win.
The teams spent much of the opening period feeling things out in very defensive period that saw both teams manage just five shots on goal. The first good chance of the game came on the first shot of the game during an early Rensselaer power play. The scoring chance belonged to the Tigers as freshman Mark Magnowski blocked a RPI shot and sprung senior Darroll Powe on a breakaway, but RPI netminder Jordan Alford made a stick save to preserve the scoreless tie.
Princeton broke onto the board first when freshman Cam French scored his first collegiate goal on a weird play at 9:30. French took the shot that he scored on from behind the goal and it bounced up over the net and off Alford before winding up in the net. Sophomore Brandan Kushniruk added an assist on the goal, his second helper of the season.
Rensselaer quickly evened the score when Andrei Uryadov scored on a rebound just in front of the Tiger net 1:10 later. Peter Merth took the initial shot, which was blocked by the Tiger defense, but Uryadov was first to the rebound and scored in the top right corner. Matt Angers-Goulet added an assist.
RPI made it 2-1 less than 1:30 later when Kirk MacDonald deflected a shot on the power-play. The point shot was taken by Jake Luthi. Seth Klerer also received an assist on the goal as MacDonald's last second deflection lifted the puck over the outstretched pad of Princeton goaltender Zane Kalemba.
Down a goal entering the second period, the Tigers played strong outshooting Rensselaer 17-5 in the period. Despite the lopsided shot total, Rensselaer took a 3-1 lead at 8:05 of the period just as a Tiger penalty expired when Jake Morrisette scored on a rebound.
After the goal, Princeton started to take control of the play, and final broke through on Alford at 17:13 when junior Kyle Hagel scored on the power play. Sophomore Lee Jubinville and Kushniruk worked the puck down low before Kushiniruk set up Jubinville for a one-time. The shot was blocked and remained in the feet of Jubinville and the Engineer defensemen as Hagel skated in and roofed the puck up over Alford for his first goal of the season.
Princeton strong defense continued in the second period as the Tigers limited Rensselaer to just one shot. Princeton took 11 and used the final one to even the score at 3-3 and force overtime. On the power-play late, the Tigers pulled Kalemba for the 6 on 4 advantage. Senior Grant Goeckner-Zoeller worked the puck to freshman Jody Pederson at the point who took a shot that reached Alford. Alford knocked down the puck and senior Kevin Westgarth had two swipes at the rebound, the second of which slid under Alford and forced overtime. The goal came with 39.9 seconds left in regulation.
Princeton had the first good chances of overtime but Rensselaer used a broken play late to score the game winner with 16 seconds left on the clock. Seth Klerer scored the goal on a rebound out of a scrum, in front of the Tiger net and Oren Eizenmann added an assist.
Alford steered aside 35 of the 38 shots he faced for the win, while Kalemba made nine saves for Princeton.
The Tigers are now 0-2-1 and visit Union tomorrow night at 7 p.m.
