Union Edges Princeton Men in Overtime
November 04, 2006 | Men's Ice Hockey
SCHENECTADY, N.Y. -- Olivier Bouchard's goal 1:06 into overtime spoiled a Princeton comeback as Union defeated the Tiger men's hockey team 4-3 in overtime on Saturday night at Messa Rink. Sophomore Lee Jubinville scored twice for Princeton in the loss.
Bouchard's overtime game winner came as Union controlled the puck in the corner and drove to the net, taking a knuckler of a shot that bounces by Princeton sophomore goaltender Thomas Sychterz to give Union the win.
The teams found their ways to overtime after Jubinville force it with a wrist shot goal at 12:45 of the third period. The goal was his second of the game and capped a rush. Senior Kevin Westgarth worked the puck to Jubinville who carried it into the Union end, and faked a shot to give him some room from the Union defender, then took a laser of shot that evaded Union goaltender Justin Mrazek.
Union scored the game's first goal when Matt Cook made a great play on a 2 on 1 to get the puck to T.J. Fox who scored on a one-timer. The goal came with 1:45 left in the first period and was the only goal of that frame.
Princeton scored twice in the second period to go ahead 2-1. The first goal was shorthanded and came from Jubinville. He started the play by intercepting a Union dump-in and took it the other way. After gaining the blue line he fired a long shot that Mrazek saved through a screen, but sophomore Brandan Kushniruk took a swipe at the rebound, then Jubinville who found the back of the net for the goal.
Princeton made the score 2-1 later in the period with a power-play goal from senior Grant Goeckner-Zoeller. Freshman Jody Pederson's point shot was saved by Mrazek, but Westgarth got the puck over to Goeckner-Zoeller on the far post who got it over the line for the goal.
Princeton led 2-1 after two periods but two Union goals in a 1:32 span gave the Dutchmen the lead. First at 6:01 Jeff Christiansen scored on a 2 on 1 shorthanded, when his shot, which was initially saved by Sychterz trickled over the line. The second goal came from Cook, who directed a pass inside the near post.
With Union up a goal, it set up Jubinville's second goal, which tied the game and forced the overtime session.
Sychterz made 28 saves for Princeton while Mrazek made 30 for Union as Princeton outshot its fourth opponent of the season. Shots were 33-32 for the game.
