Penn's Unger Scores in Overtime, Gives Quakers 1-0 Win in Men's Soccer
November 04, 2006 | Men's Soccer
The Princeton men's soccer team played seven overtime matches in 2006. Unfortunately for the Tigers, their final overtime match ended on the wrong side of the ledger.
Penn's Kevin Unger drilled a low shot into the lower right corner of the net with just 27 seconds left in the first 10-minute overtime, giving the Quakers a 1-0 win over the Tigers in the season finale played at Lourie-Love Field Saturday afternoon.
The win gave the Quakers (9-4-2, 5-1-1 Ivy) a chance at an Ivy championship for a few moments, but Harvard defeated Columbia in Cambridge by a 3-1 score to earn the league title for 2006.
Princeton (6-8-3, 1-5-1 Ivy) and Penn played an entertaining match for the 90 minutes of regulation despite the scoreless finish. The teams combined for 29 shots and several chances in regulation, but goalies Justin Oppenheimer and Dan Cepero combined for 11 saves to help the game go into overtime.
Penn's final goal came from midfield. Mike Klein sent a pass into the box to Unger, who turned and hit the left-footed shot past Oppenheimer for the golden goal.
Jeff Livingston had a chance for the Quakers just 30 seconds earlier, but his shot went high over the crossbar.
The game was the final home game for five Princeton seniors, all of whom started the match.
Junior Kyle McHugh had five of Princeton's 14 shots. He had an early chance in overtime that was stopped by Cepero.
The Tigers finished the season 1-3-3 in overtime games.
