Women's Fencing Opens Season at Penn State

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- The Princeton women's fencing team began its season Saturday at Penn State's Garret Open, an individual event.
Princeton had four entrants in the foil, led by freshman Jocelyn Svengsouk's eighth-place finish, putting her into a 16-person bracket. She defeated Misha Golofeder of Harvard, 15-9 in the opening round before falling to Penn's Abby Emerson 15-14. Senior Sara Jew-Lim finished 33rd and rookies Karen Petsche and Ann Gong finished 36th and 37th, respectively, putting them in the consolation draw. Both Petsche and Gong won their first three matches before facing each other in the consolation final. Petsche won, 15-4.
In the epee, senior Erin McGarry finished sixth while rookie Chandler Clay placed 16th. In the finals draw, McGarry defeated Kristen Hughes of Penn, 15-10, before losing to Wayne State's Justyna Konczalska, also 15-10. Clay fell in her first-round match to Kelley Hurley of Notre Dame, 15-4. Sophomore Jasjit Bhinder was 33rd, Jane Yum was 47th and rookie Lauren Clark was 62nd. Yum and Clark faced each other in the opening round of the consolation draw with Yum winning, 15-11. She also beat Brooke Snyder of Cleveland State, 15-13, before losing to eventual consolation champ Naomi Bocarsly of Drew, 15-10.
In the sabre, sophomores Cara DiGirolamo placed 22nd, Jessica Fields placed 38th, Tao Goffe took 43rd and senior Allison Wuertz placed 49th. Goffe fell to Cleveland State's Daniel Shepherd, 15-13, in round one of the consolation draw, while Wuertz dispatched Johns Hopkins' Britni Crocker, 15-4 in the first round. That sent her to a meeting with Wuertz, who had a first-round bye. Wuertz won 15-10 and went on to beat Temple's Kristine Jones, 15-14, and Penn State's Lily Matusiak by the same score in the consolation semi before losing to Penn State's Nikoleta Proudan, 15-8 in the final.
