This Week's Storylines
On to the North Country
The Princeton men's hockey team continues its season this weekend with games at St. Lawrence and Clarkson. The games complete a four-game stretch of road games for the Tigers, who return home next weekend.
Last Weekend
The Tigers began the league portion of their schedule with a pair of overtime losses at Rensselaer and Union. Princeton trailed both games in the third period 3-2 and rallied to force overtime, but ended up falling in the extra session.
Three-By-Five
Including Princeton's exhibition game against McGill, the Tigers have played three times this season and have scored three goals in each game.
Too Close for Comfort
Dating back to last season, 11 of Princeton's last 14 games have been decided by a goal or ended in a tie, including all four games this season. Princeton is 1-7-3 in those 11 games. Seven of those games have gone to overtime and Princeton is 0-5-2 in those games including last weekend.
More About Overtime
Seven of Princeton's last eight league games, dating back to last season, have gone to overtime. Princeton is 0-5-2 in those games.
The Series With St. Lawrence
Princeton and St. Lawrence have met 73 times with the Saints holding a 52-16-5 series edge. Princeton won the team's last meeting, which snapped a nine-game St. Lawrence unbeaten streak in the series. The Saints are 27-6-2 all-time on the Appleton Arena ice against the Tigers.
Scouting the Saints
St. Lawrence is 4-3-0 overall and 2-0-0 in the ECACHL and is one of three teams tied atop the standings. After a season-opening win, the Saints lost their next three before winning their most recent three games. Last weekend the Saints swept Dartmouth and Harvard in their league opening weekend.
A Season Ago
Last season St. Lawrence and Princeton split their regular season games with each team winning at home. On Nov. 19 in Canton, Princeton took a 2-1 lead at the end of one on goals from Brett Westgarth and Grant Goeckner-Zoeller, but St. Lawrence rallied to win 3-2. On Feb. 3 in Princeton, the Tigers trailed 3-2 in the third, but Brett Wilson tied the game and Patrick Neundorfer scored the game winner 2:24 remaining to lift Princeton to a 4-3 win.
The Series With Clarkson
Princeton is 16-31-4 all-time against Clarkson and is 2-33-0 in Potsdam. Last season the teams met four times, twice in the regular season and twice in the playoffs, with Clarkson winning three times.
Scouting the Golden Knights
Clarkson is 6-1-1 overall and 2-0-0 in the ECACHL. The Golden Knights have climbed to the No. 11 spot in the national polls. Clarkson opened the season 3-0-1 before a loss to Lake Superior. The Knights rebounded with a 7-1 win against Lake Superior the following night and swept Harvard and Dartmouth last weekend.
A Season Ago
Clarkson took three of four games from Princeton last season. Clarkson won the first game on Nov. 17 at home in overtime after the Tigers rallied to tie it late. On Feb. 4 in Princeton, the Tigers raced to a 3-0 lead only to have Clarkson pressure late, but Princeton held on for a 4-2 win. The teams also met twice in the playoffs. Clarkson won the opening game 2-1 in a tight contest despite being outshot, then won 5-0 the following night.
Special Teams
Seven of the last nine goals Princeton has scored have come on special teams. The Tigers have six power-play goals and a shorthanded goal in that span.
Immediate Impact
All 10 Tiger freshmen have appeared so far this season. Five of the nine skaters have at least one point, while three – Mark Magnowski, Jody Pederson and Cam French – have multiple points. Zane Kalemba has appeared in two games in the Tiger goal.
Streaks
Three Tigers carry three-game point scoring streaks into this weekend. Kevin Westgarth has had five points (2G-3A) in his last three games, Brandan Kushniruk has four assists in his last three games and Jody Pederson has assists in each of the last three games. Lee Jubinville has three points (2G,1A) in his last two games.
Weekly Honor
Lee Jubinville was named to the ECACHL Honor Roll on Monday. Jubinville assisted on Princeton's second goal on Friday at Rensselaer, then scored the Tigers first and third goals at Union. The first was shorthanded.
Shorthanded Goal
Lee Jubinville's shorthanded goal on Saturday at Union was Princeton's first shorthanded goal in a 49-game stretch. The last Tiger shorthanded goal came on Jan. 4, 2005 when Darroll Powe scored one against American International. Landis Stankievech also had a shorthanded goal that season at Cornell.
More Firsts
Cam French scored a goal and added an assist on Friday at Rensselaer for the first two points of his collegiate career. Four other Tiger freshmen have tallied points this season and one other – Mark Magnowski – had had a multiple-point game.
Around the ECACHL
In addition to the Princeton/Quinnipiac-Clarkson/St. Lawrence league weekend, Harvard and Dartmouth visit Colgate and Cornell. In non-league action, Brown hosts Wayne State for two while Rensselaer hosts Merrimack and Yale hosts Connecticut.
Polling Station
Princeton was picked to finish 10th by both the coaches and the media in the ECACHL preseason polls for the second straight season. The Tigers finished ninth in the ECAC Hockey League standings a season ago. St. Lawrence was chosen sixth by the coaches and seventh by the media, while Clarkson was second among the coaches and fifth among the media.
On the Horizon
Princeton returns to Baker Rink next weekend after four games away from home to face Cornell and Colgate.
