Three Women's Soccer Tigers Honored as Matheson Earns First-Team All-Ivy
November 09, 2006 | Women's Soccer
PRINCETON, N.J. -- Junior midfielder Diana Matheson, sophomore defender Taylor Numann and sophomore midfielder Jen Om have been honored by the Ivy League on its all-conference teams, the league office announced late Wednesday.
Matheson has been named First-Team All-Ivy by the league's coaches for the third straight year, all three times by unanimous selection. Her teammate for two years and frequent target on offense, Emily Behncke '06, was Princeton's last three-time First-Team All-Ivy player, earning the honor from 2003-05. She will have the chance next year to become just the third four-time first-teamer in Princeton history, following Heather Deerin '03 and Lynette Prescott '85.
Matheson led Princeton with eight goals and five assists on the year for a total of 21 points, despite missing five games to train and play with the Canadian national team. Even with the absences, Matheson, who played 11 games, finished tied for third in the league in total points behind Brown's Kathryn Moos (36 points, 17 games) and Penn's Jessica Fuccello (23 points, 16 games), and was second in the league behind Moos in points per game at 1.91.
Numann earned First-Team All-Ivy honors and was recognized for the first time in her career for her outstanding work on defense. Princeton limited its opponents to 17 goals in 2006, down from 21 a year ago, and posted shutouts in half of its 16 games. The Tigers will take a shutout streak of 393:13 into next season. Numann had a goal as well, knocking in a free kick at eventual league-champion Columbia in October.
Om received honorable mention and Ivy recognition for the first time in her career. She scored a goal and had an assist at American in the game that started Princeton on its four-match winning streak to end the season.
Princeton finished the year 8-7-1 overall to earn its 10th straight winning season.
