Princeton Falls to Alabama-Huntsville 3-2
December 02, 2006 | Men's Ice Hockey
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. -- Princeton defensemen Mike Moore and Max Cousins scored for the Tigers, but Alabama-Huntsville goaltender Marc Narduzzi made 40 saves to lead the Chargers to a 3-2 win over the Princeton men's hockey team on Saturday night at the Von Braun Center. UAH used a two-goal second period to snap a 1-1 tie and go ahead 3-1 and held off the Tigers in the final period.
The Chargers opened the scoring at 11:53 of the first period when Brennan Barker's point shot deflected off a Tiger skate into the Princeton goal. The shot came just after an offensive zone face off win by Tyler Hilbert.
Princeton evened the score in the first period when Moore connected with his first goal of the season on the power play. The goal snapped a 45-game goalless streak for the junior. The play developed as UAH defenseman Scott Kalinchuk gloved the puck and tried to clear it out of the zone. Moore caught it, put it down, then shot through a screen to knot the game at 1-1.
UAH went ahead for good with two goals in the second period. Both goals were scored on the power play. The first came with the two-man advantage when David Nimmo collected the rebound of a Mike Salekin shot at 4:54 and the second came when Brett McConnachie found Grant Selinger alone at the back door for a one-timer.
Princeton outshot UAH 42-17 for the game and 12-3 in the third period and got on the board during a 4 on 3 power-play chance at 10:52. Senior Grant Goeckner-Zoeller fed Cousins alone up top and Cousins shot through a screen to move the Tigers within a goal. Senior Kevin Westgarth also assisted on the goal.
Narduzzi finished the game with 40 saves while Princeton freshman Zane Kalemba made 14 saves in the Charger goal.
Princeton returns to league play next weekend when it hosts Union and Rensselaer at Baker Rink.
