Kushniruk's Goal Lifts Tigers to 4-3 Overtime Win
December 08, 2006 | Men's Ice Hockey
PRINCETON -- The Princeton men's hockey team entered Friday night's game against Union winless in its last 27 trips to overtime. Sixty-two minutes and 52 seconds later, the Tigers snapped that streak as Tiger sophomore Brandan Kushniruk scored in the extra session to lift Princeton to a 4-3 win over the Dutchmen at Baker Rink.
In a back-and-forth game that saw Union erase a 3-1 Princeton lead with two goals in a 25-second span of the third period, the Tigers fought back to pick up the win in overtime. Senior Darroll Powe dumped the puck into the corner where he and sophomore linemate Lee Jubinville worked to gain possession of the puck. After drawing over the Union defenders, Jubinville fed Kushniruk in front who had been left alone and he buried the shot for his third goal of the season.
“Lee and Darroll were working well in the corner and I was left alone in front,” said Kushniruk. “Once I saw the pass coming I just wanted to bury it.”
Princeton's win was its first in overtime since a 2-1 overtime win over Yale on Nov. 20, 2001 at Baker Rink. Matt Maglione had the game winner that night and Princeton was 0-14-13 in its last 27 overtime games, including a 0-2-2 record this season.
“This was a big win,” said head coach Guy Gadowsky. “We have worked hard all season and tonight that paid off for us in overtime. It is really good for the team to get a win like this and gain the confidence of an overtime win.”
Kushniruk's goal capped a game that Princeton looked to be in control of after two periods, only to have Union claw back. The Tigers opened the scoring 4:08 into the game when senior Grant Goeckner-Zoeller caused a turnover in the neutral zone and went in on Union goaltender Justin Mrazek on a breakaway. Goeckner-Zoeller faked forehand before going to his backhand for his fourth goal of the season and first of three points on the night.
Union evened the score 43 seconds later though when Chris Potts slid a rebound into the Tiger goal. Union controlled low as Matt Cook's original shot was blocked, but Potts found the rebound and scored.
Princeton took control of the game in the second period, outshooting Union 12-4 in the period and scoring two goals, both on the power play. Junior Mike Moore scored his second goal in as many games at 8:24 of the period as his shot found its way through a screen set up by sophomore Brett Wilson. Senior Max Cousins and Goeckner-Zoeller assisted on the goal.
At 13:47 Wilson scored his third of the season off the rush. Goeckner-Zoeller fed senior Kevin Westgarth for a one-timer but Westgarth fanned on the shot, but directed it right to Wilson who shot it into the open net to give the Tigers a 3-1 lead.
Union moved back within a goal at 12:40 of the third period when Jason Walters point shot his a Tiger stick and was redirected into the Princeton goal. Twenty-five seconds later Jason Shaffer had a rebound bounce off his body and into the Tiger goal as Union evened the score with 6:45 remaining in the game.
The score remained 3-3 and headed to overtime to set the stage for Kushniruk's heroics.
Freshman goaltender Zane Kalemba made 33 saves for the win while Mrazek stopped 32 shots in the loss. Princeton and Union both had 36 shots on goal in the game.
Princeton is now 4-7-2 overall this season and 3-5-1 in the ECACHL. Union fell to 5-6-2 overall and 1-4-0 in the league. Princeton hosts Rensselaer tomorrow night at 7 p.m.
