Tigers Skate Past Rensselaer 6-2
December 10, 2006 | Men's Ice Hockey
PRINCETON -- Sophomore Lee Jubinville scored midway through the second period to snap a 2-2 tie as the Princeton men's hockey team scored the game next four goals in a 6-2 win against Rensselaer on Saturday night at Baker Rink. Jubinville and senior Max Cousins each had three points in the game.
Princeton dominated play from the outset, outshooting the Engineers 18-4 in the first period. The Tigers were held off the scoreboard though most of the way however until senior Darroll Powe converted for his seventh goal of the season off an offensive zone draw with a minute left to play. Jubinville won the draw back to Cousins on defense, who fed Powe for the goal.
Rensselaer used two quick goals at the start of the second period to take a short-lived lead in the game. First at 1:01 of the second Andrei Uryadov shot from the circle bounced by Princeton freshman goaltender Zane Kalemba, then Jordan Cyr's shot from the corner 1:19 later eluded Kalemba and gave RPI the lead.
The Engineer lead lasted just over a minute until senior Kevin Westgarth's fourth goal of the year evened the score at 2-2. Cousins lofted the puck into the RPI zone from the neutral zone and Westgarth fired it through the legs of RPI goaltender Jordan Alford when it landed to even the score.
Princeton regained the lead at 8:07 when Jubinville capped an end-to-end rush with his fifth goal of the season. After blocking a point shot as a Tiger penalty expired, Jubinville raced into the Engineer end before scoring a shot to Alford's glove side, which chased Alford from the net.
Princeton sealed the win with three goals in the final period. The first came at 6:49 when freshman Dan Bartlett caught a pass from classmate Jody Pederson at the blue line and stuffed in his third of the season. Less than three minutes later the Tigers added a power-play tally as Powe scored his second of the game, redirecting a point shot from senior Brett Westgarth into the RPI goal. Freshman Mark Magnowski sealed the win with a shorthanded empty-net goal.
"That was our most complete game played all season," remarked Princeton Head Coach Guy Gadowsky. "Rensselaer is a good team, and we were able to take 46 shots on them and score six times."
Princeton outshot RPI 46-14 for the game. Kalemba made 12 saves for the win, while Alford took the loss. He made 21 saves while Mathias Lange made 19.
Princeton, which defeated Union last night 4-2 in overtime, improved to 5-7-2 with the win and 4-5-1 in the ECACHL following the weekend sweep.
