Jubinville Lifts Tigers to Win With OT Goal
December 29, 2006 | Men's Ice Hockey
PRINCETON -- Sophomore Lee Jubinville scored 43 seconds into overtime to lift the Princeton men's hockey team to a 3-2 win over Nebraska-Omaha on Friday night at Baker Rink. The Tigers never trailed in the game and improved to 6-7-2 with the win. Junior Landis Stankievech had a goal and an assist in the game.
The win was Princeton's third win in a row and moved the Tigers to 5-1-1 in their last seven games. Princeton also won its second-straight overtime game after going winless in its previous 27 trips to overtime.
The Tigers opened the score win the lone goal of the first period when Stankievech tallied his third of the season on a deflection of a point shot from senior Brett Westgarth. Junior Kyle Hagel also assisted on the goal that gave Princeton a 1-0 lead after a period.
UNO evened the score at 4:11 of the second period when Tomas Klempa scored on the power play. His goal was assisted by Alex Nikiforuk and Scott Parse. The Mavericks controlled play for much of the second period but the Tigers regained the lead just past halfway.
A UNO defender tried to dump the puck into the Tiger zone but his dump bounced off the shin pad of Stankievech and spring freshman Kevin Kaiser the other way. Kaiser had a 2-on-1 and faked a pass before shooting above the left pad of the goaltender for his first collegiate goal.
The Tigers led after two periods but Nebraska-Omaha continued to pressure and eventually scored with 6:35 left in the period when Bill Bagnron redirected a Nikiforuk pass just inside the far post to even things up. Parse also assisted on the goal off the end-to-end rush.
Princeton held on late in the period as UNO outshot the Tigers in the period but Tiger freshman Zane Kalemba was equal to the task, making 10 saves in the third period and 27 in the game.
Jubinville took the only shot of overtime and ended the game with it as his shot eluded Maverick goaltender Jeremie Dupont. Senior Max Cousins pressured the play down low and caused a turnover. He quickly got the puck to Jubinville who circled to the middle and scored to lift the Tigers to the win.
Princeton is now 6-7-2 overall and remained 4-5-1 in ECAC Hockey League play. The Tigers return to action tomorrow night against Minnesota State at 7 p.m.
