HOUSTON, Texas - Senior epee fencer Ben Solomon stands in first place after four of seven rounds at the NCAA Championships in Houston, Texas and is in position to compete Sunday in a four-man elimination tournament for the national epee title.
Solomon defeated 12 opponents on Saturday and will complete the 24-person round-robin competition tomorrow. If he places in the top four at that time, Solomon will compete in a four-man single-elimination tournament that will decide the national champion. Solomon placed fifth in the nation as a freshman, 19th as a sophomore and eighth last year. With a first-place finish, Solomon would become Princeton's eighth men's national champion, fifth in the epee and first since Soren Thompson in 2001.
Sophomore Tommi Hurme stands in 16th place in the epee after day one, and fellow soph Douglas Hohensee is in 10th place in the foil competition. Each has three more rounds to compete on Sunday. Both are in their first NCAA Championships appearance.
The final three rounds for both the foil and the epee will begin at 9 a.m. CT while the four-man single-elimination competition starts at noon CT.
In the combined men's-women's team scores, Princeton stands 8th of 29 schools after placing 10th following the women's competition Thursday and Friday.
