While it certainly was chilly outside Penn State's Holuba Hall Saturday afternoon, the Princeton women's lacrosse team was pretty much on fire inside the building.
Princeton connected on 17 of its 31 shots, getting four goals apiece from Kathleen Miller and Kristin Schwab, scored the game's first six goals and put it away late with five goals in the final eight minutes on the way to a 17-9 victory over the Nittany Lions.
The No. 4 Tigers (2-2), who won at Penn State for the seventh straight time, scored three times in the first three minutes and three more times in a two-minute span midway through the first half to take a 6-0 advantage. Then, after the Nittany Lions (3-3) cut their deficit to 7-5 early in the second half, the Tigers pulled away again, getting goals from three freshmen in a four-goal run to take an insurmountable 11-5 lead with 11 minutes left.
Eight Princeton players scored a goal, and five scored more than once. Miller had the final two goals in Princeton's six-goal run to begin the game, while Schwab scored three of her four goals in the decisive second half.
The Tigers also held Penn State to just 19 shots and forced 11 of the Lions' 21 turnovers.
Shari Maslin had two goals and two assists to lead Penn State, which had defeated top-ranked Princeton in overtime at Class of 1952 Stadium last season. Katie Lewis-Lamonica and Schwab scored unassisted goals 2:04 apart to give Princeton a 2-0 lead early, and two consecutive goals by Caitlin Reimers made it 4-0 midway through the half.
Penn State made a comeback, however, scoring four straight after Princeton's opening six-goal run. Maslin's goal with 10 minutes left in half made it 6-4 Princeton, but a goal by Princeton's Katie Cox with just under three minutes left gave the Tigers a 7-4 halftime lead.
The Nittany Lions were within 12-8 after a Lindsay Dutch goal with 8:15 left, but freshman Anne Murray's first career goal after that began a three-goal Princeton run that put the game away for good.
Lewis-Lamonica and Cox each scored twice for Princeton, which also had 25 ground balls to 20 for the Lions. Princeton goalie Meg Murray had six saves.
Princeton plays at Georgetown Wednesday afternoon (3:30 p.m.) in a game that will be televised by CSTV.
