WASHINGTON, D.C. - At the beginning, there was Lucy Poole. At the end, there was Coco Stanwick. All of which made Princeton's come-from-behind effort in the middle fall short.
Poole scored three of Georgetown's four first-half goals and Stanwick broke open a one-goal affair by scoring twice in a 46-second span late in the game to lead the No. 6 Hoyas to a 9-7 win over the No. 4 Tigers in a women's lacrosse game played at the Multi-Sport Field Wednesday.
The Hoya win, the first for Georgetown (5-1) over Princeton since the 2002 season opener, dropped Princeton to 2-3 on the season. All three losses have come to teams currently ranked in the top five in the IWLCA poll.
"I think to have a chance to beat them you have to do a good job on both Poole and Stanwick, who are great players," said Princeton head coach Chris Sailer. "We weren't able to hold either of them down defensively."
Princeton, which trailed 4-2 at halftime and 6-3 with 19 minutes left, cut its deficit to 7-6 with nine minutes left after Holly McGarvie found Alex Gangler in front for a goal off a transition opportunity.
But Stanwick then made her game-changing two-goal spurt. The first came with 6:43 left, when she took a pass from Schuyler Sutton in close and drilled a turnaround shot past Princeton goalie Meg Murray. 46 seconds later, Sara Zorzi found Stanwick from behind the net to make it 9-6 Georgetown.
The Tigers made it 9-7 with 1:45 left when Katie Atkins found Kristin Schwab from behind the net off a quick restart, but Princeton wouldn't get another chance after that. Schwab scored three times for Princeton, including a first-half goal that made it 1-1 and an early second-half goal that made it 4-3 Georgetown. The Tigers led just once, at 2-1, after Kathleen Miller scored on an unassisted drive midway through the first half.
Princeton got six free-position opportunities but converted on just one, a McGarvie goal with 17:28 left that made it 6-4 Georgetown. Four of Georgetown goalie Maggie Koch's eight saves came on free-position opportunities, including two in the final four minutes of the game.
"We did not do a great job of taking advantage of opportunities both in transition and in the half field," Sailer said. "Their goalie played well and made key plays when we needed a goal the most."
Georgetown outshot the Tigers 27-23, but Princeton goalie Meg Murray had 10 saves to help keep her team within striking distance throughout.
Poole and Stanwick combined to score seven of nine goals for the Hoyas, who had lost four straight to the Tigers entering the game.
