Morrisroe's Winner, Blake's Record-Setting Day Lead Princeton Past Brown In Ivy Semi Thriller
May 02, 2025 | Women's Lacrosse
McKenzie Blake broke a major record — in a big way. Meg Morrisroe broke the hearts of the Brown Bears — also in a major way.
Ultimately, the Princeton women's lacrosse team survived a major scare — also in a major way. Were those smiles of joy, relief or both when it ended. Meg Morrisroe ended a game of runs with the winning goal with 41.2 seconds to play as Princeton defeated Brown 17-16 n the first Ivy League tournament semifinal on Sherrerd Field. Princeton advances to Sunday's noon championship game against the winner of Semifinal No. 2 between Yale and Penn. The winner of that game will get the league's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.
Brown led 6-2 after one and 11-7 at the half. Princeton went on a 9-1 run to start the second half, making it 16-12 Tigers. Brown scored four straight in the fourth quarter to tie it at 16-16, setting up a wildly dramatic ending. First Princeton freshman goalie Elizabeth Gonnella made a save with 1:40 to play, after a great defensive stand by the Tigers.
After a clear and timeout, Princeton worked the ball behind to Haven Dora, who found the cutting Morrisroe for the winner. As for Blake, she scored five times, breaking Kyla Sears' program record for career goals in the process.
Blake came into the game one goal away from tying Sears and got that one goal early in the second quarter, after the Tigers had fallen behind 6-2. Within a little more than two minutes, she added the record-breaker — her 210th — and then scored again, but the Bears hung tough to maintain the four-goal lead at 11-7 at the break. It took Princeton six minutes after the break to take the lead, with a 5-0 run that included two more from Blake, two from Nina Montes and one from Jami MacDonald.
Even when Brown tied it again at 12-12, Princeton scored four more in a row, including three from MacDonald (5G, 2A), to push the run to 9-1 and the score to 16-12. In a blink, it was 16-16. And then the Tigers had survived, on the Morrisroe from Dora score.
