Women's Lacrosse Falls In NCAA Quarterfinals To #1 North Carolina
May 15, 2025 | Women's Lacrosse
A 2025 season that saw Princeton win 16 games and an outright Ivy League championship came to an end in the NCAA Quarterfinals with a 19-10 loss to No. 1 seed North Carolina in Chapel Hill.
Both teams defended well in the first quarter, but a 6-0 North Carolina run in the second quarter broke open a 3-1 game and put the Tigers behind by eight – a deficit too large to overcome for Princeton.
Amelia Hughes was stellar in goal for the Tigers in the loss, making a season-high 16 saves.
The game remained a one-goal affair until Sophie Whiteway slipped a free position inside the right post 9:09 into the first quarter.
The Tar Heels connected on a free position of their own with 57.3 seconds to play in the first quarter and then Marissa White deposited a Caroline Godine pass with 13.5 seconds to play to give the Tar Heels a 3-1 lead after the first period of play.
The run for the Tar Heels extended to eight during the second quarter before Jami MacDonald ended a scoreless run of 19:58 for the Tigers with a goal with 53.7 seconds to play in the half.
North Carolina opened the second half with a pair of goals before McKenzie Blake and Nina Montes scored 1:45 apart to give Princeton back-to-back goals for the first time in the game.
After the Tar Heels scored the next three, Jami MacDonald dialed up two more goals in the final 2:00 of the third quarter.
Blake opened the fourth quarter with a goal 1:44 in to cut the deficit to seven, but the Tar Heels countered with three of the next four to deny any chance of a Princeton comeback.
