WILMINGTON, N.C. - Princeton women's tennis coach Kathy Sell didn't just see her Tigers get their second win of a Spring Break trip Saturday at UNC Wilmington. She also got some family bragging rights for at least one day.
Sell's Tigers defeated the Seahawks, coached by her oldest sister, Jenny Garrity, by a 6-1 score on Saturday. The Tigers won five singles matches in straight sets after taking the doubles point.
The Tigers started slowly in doubles, falling at No. 1, but won the point when Christine Kansky and Rankin Williams defeated Kristin Mears and Lauren Isenhour by an 8-6 score at No. 3. Kansky and Williams finished 3-1 at No. 3 doubles on the trip.
In singles, Kansky concluded a 4-0 trip for the Tigers with an impressive 6-1, 6-2 victory over Katie Carlson at No. 3. Kelly Stewart lost just four games in a win over Cassie Martin at No. 5, while Darcy Robertson was a 6-2, 6-3 winner at No. 1 over Molly Molony.
Ivana King's come-from-behind three-set win over Lindsey Hess at No. 2 singles gave her a 3-1 record on Princeton's spring trip.
Sell is in her second season as Princeton's head coach. Garrity has previously been the head coach at both N.C. State and Kansas before becoming the head coach at UNC Wilmington.
Princeton finished 2-2 on a spring trip that also saw Sell coach against her alma mater, 10th-ranked Duke, where she played from 1997-2001. The Tigers are 6-6 on the season heading into Ivy League play, which begins at home against Penn on Saturday. Princeton 6, UNC Wilmington 1 March 25, 2006
