CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Despite six strong innings from sophomore pitcher Kristen Schaus in which she gave up only three hits and a walk, the Princeton softball team fell to 1-2 on the young season with a 1-0 loss to Canisius (4-3) on Saturday morning in Chapel Hill, N.C. It was the third straight one-run game for the Tigers to start the year at the University of North Carolina's Tar Heel Invitational.
The game was scoreless until the bottom of the sixth when Schaus gave up two of her three hits. Canisius' Katie Miranto knocked a one-out single and was moved to second when the next batter, pinch-hitter Melissa Lemos, was hit by a pitch. That opened the opportunity for Jess Martin's two-out single to break the deadlock.
For their part, the Tigers managed only two hits after splitting a pair of games on Friday to open the season. Erin Snyder, yesterday's hero after hitting a three-run home run to tie things up with South Carolina in the opener and striking out 15 North Carolina batters in the nightcap, had one, and rookie Jackie Araneo had the other. But both Tigers ended up stranded as no Princeton runner advanced past second base in the day's opener.
While Schaus (0-1) ended up a hard-luck pitcher for the second straight day, striking out nine in the loss, Saturday morning's beneficiaries were Canisius' Lindsay Garbacz and Juliette Bowers. Garbacz threw the first five innings, giving up both hits but inducing only two Tiger strikeouts. Bowers walked three in her two innings despite not giving up a hit, picking up the save. Princeton continues its day with Memphis at 12:30 p.m.
