COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Princeton women's tennis team gave 33rd-ranked Maryland all it could handle Sunday afternoon before dropping a 4-3 decision to the Terps that was clinched when Maryland's Michal Amir defeated the Tigers' Joanna Roth at No. 5.
Maryland won the doubles point, but the Tigers (4-4) were within 3-2 overall in the match after wins by Jessica Siebel at No. 2 and Kelly Stewart at No. 6. Siebel defeated Veronika Subertova impressively by scores of 6-4 and 6-0, while Stewart lost just three games in a straight-set win over Juliana Naso at No. 6.
At No. 1 singles, Darcy Robertson split the first two sets with Marianne Baker, but Baker came back to win the third set 6-0 in what would be the only three-set match of the day.
Ivana King was also a winner for Princeton, defeating Jennifer Dent at No. 4, and she joined with Siebel to earn a 9-7 win for Princeton at No. 1 doubles. Maryland clinched the doubles point when Dent and Amir defeated Roth and Robertson 8-6 at No. 2.
Princeton next plays March 19, when the Tigers begin their Spring Break trip with a match at North Carolina State.
