Harvard Wins Tight One in Men's Tennis over Princeton, 4-3

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Princeton defeated two nationally-ranked doubles teams to win the doubles point, but Harvard earned three-set wins at Nos. 3 and 4 singles to pull out a 4-3 victory over the Tigers in a men's tennis match played Saturday afternoon.
The Tigers (6-12, 1-4 Ivy) got a huge doubles point when Andrew Lieu and Ted Mabrey defeated 43rd-ranked Ashwin Kumar and Sasha Ermakov and Hans Plukas and Alex Krueger-Wyman outlasted No. 59 Gideon Valkin and Scott Denenberg by a 9-7 score. But Ermakov defeated Plukas 6-2 in the third at No. 4 singles and Dan Nguyen beat Lieu 6-1 in the third at No. 3 to help Harvard clinch the match.
Princeton got singles wins at both No. 5 and No. 6. At No. 6, Shannon Morales defeated Denenberg in a second-set tiebreak. At No. 5, freshman Alex Vuckovic came back from a set down to defeat Nick Savage 6-2 in the third set.
The Tigers visit Columbia on Friday afternoon as they begin their final weekend of competition in 2006.
