NEW YORK - In a marathon match that took more than six hours to complete, Columbia won a hard-fought 5-2 decision over Princeton in a men's tennis match played at the Dick Savitt Tennis Center.
After Columbia (13-4, 4-2 Ivy) won 9-8 at No. 1 doubles to take that point, the Lions looked like they were on their way to an easy victory after straight set wins at Nos. 6 and 3 singles. But the Tigers (6-13, 1-5 Ivy) then battled back, getting a win from Darius Craton at No. 2 to make it 3-1.
The remaining three singles matches were all marathons, each of which had at least one tiebreak, but the Lions clinched when Marty Moore outlasted Hans Plukas at No. 4 in three sets after losing the first set. At No. 1, Sratha Saengsuwarn split tiebreaks with Mark Clemente before falling 7-5 in the third, while at No. 5, Alex Vuckovic split 7-5, 6-7 sets with Jared Drucker before Drucker retired in the third set.
Craton also got a doubles win for Princeton, joining with Shannon Morales to defeat Drucker and Dan Urban 8-4 at No. 3.
Princeton concludes its season with a home match against Cornell Sunday afternoon.
