PRINCETON, N.J. - Princeton outfielder Kathryn Welch has been named the Ivy League Softball Rookie of the Week for the third time in six opportunities, the league office announced Tuesday. The honor continues a streak for Princeton of earning at least one of the three weekly honors all six weeks.
Welch hit .450 (9 for 20) and slugged .700 against Towson, Columbia and Cornell as Princeton took three of four from its Ivy foes to move to 9-1 in conference and maintain a two-game lead over Cornell. She had a hit in five of Princeton's six games and ended the homestand on a hot streak, going 7 for 11 in the last three games of the weekend.
In game two against Columbia Saturday, Welch was 3 for 4 with two runs scored and four RBI, knocking her team-best fourth home run of the season. The next day against Cornell, Welch was 4 for 7 for the doubleheader, scoring three runs.
Welch is the team's batting leader at .373 and saw her average jump 19 points over the week. She also claimed the Ivy honor March 21 and April 4.
Princeton faces Seton Hall for a home twinbill Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. before embarking on its final Ivy weekend at Harvard and Dartmouth. If the Tigers can sweep the weekend, the Orange and Black will claim the Ivy title regardless of any other league outcome. Such a title would be Princeton's fourth in five years and advance the program to its seventh NCAA Championship appearance.
