Whitney Douthett grew up about 20 minutes away from Princeton in Newtown, Pa., and went to school about 20 minutes away from Princeton in Hightstown. Saturday afternoon at Class of 1952 Stadium, the Dartmouth junior certainly looked right at home.
Douthett scored four first-half goals, had five assists and added six ground balls and five draw controls as Dartmouth scored the game's first nine goals on the way to a convincing 15-5 win over Princeton in an Ivy League women's lacrosse game played Saturday afternoon.
Dartmouth (9-4, 5-2 Ivy) stayed in the hunt for a share of the Ivy championship by handing Princeton (8-5, 5-1 Ivy) its first Ivy loss. The Tigers also saw a six-game winning streak come to an end.
"It was nice to come back here close to home and play well," said Douthett. "The whole team did a great job right from the opening draw. It was a great team win."
"Obviously I'm not happy with the way we played, but you have to give Dartmouth a lot of credit," said Princeton head coach Chris Sailer. "They played like they had something to prove today and they had it going from the beginning."
Indeed, the Big Green quickly made it an almost insurmountable deficit for Princeton, scoring seven times in the first 15 minutes of the game, including three from Douthett. When Douthett finished her first-half scoring binge, taking a pass from Annie Leibovitz and scoring with 6:43 left in the half, Dartmouth had a 9-0 lead.
Ashley Amo's free-position goal with nine seconds left in half finally got the Tigers on the board, but Princeton never got closer than eight goals in the second half. A four-goal Dartmouth run midway through the half made it 14-2 with 8:40 left. Douthett had four of Dartmouth's five second-half assists. Jen Pittman and Kristen Barry also scored four times for Dartmouth, which can earn a share of the league title if Princeton loses at Brown Saturday and Cornell falls to Harvard Friday. The win was the second straight for the Big Green over the Tigers.
Katie Lewis-Lamonica scored twice for Princeton, while Jamie Sundheim had a goal and an assist. The Tigers, now tied with Cornell for first place in the league standings, can still earn the Ivy League's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament with a win at Brown thanks to their win over Cornell earlier this season.
Dartmouth won 14 of the game's 22 draw controls and held the Tigers to just 15 shots, including five in the first half.
Princeton hosts Delaware Tuesday afternoon at 4:30, one of two non-league games for the Tigers in the final three games of the regular season.
