Men's Heavyweights Cap Perfect Regular Season With Eastern Gold, Ivy Title

WORCESTER, Mass. - A race four years in the making went Princeton's way Sunday evening on Lake Quinsigamond. After finishing second to Harvard in each of the past two years, the No. 1 Tigers topped the Crimson by more than two seconds to claim the 2006 Eastern Sprint gold medal and the Ivy League championship. The Tigers will look to cap the perfect season in two weeks with a national championship.
Princeton finished the grand final in 5:41.59, which topped Harvard's time of 5:44.03. Brown placed third in 5:46.24.
It was a fitting finale for the senior members of the first varsity boat. Many members of the winning squad were part of the novice championship crew that won the 2003 Eastern and IRA national championship.
Princeton didn't medal in any of its remaining grand finals. The second varsity, which topped Syracuse in its semifinal heat to claim a spot in the grand final, finished sixth in 6:43.23. The third varsity finished fifth in 6:45,96, and the freshman eight finished fifth in 6:09.16.
All four boats will make their way to Cooper River in two weeks to compete for the IRA national championships.
