Heavyweight Rowing Sends All Three 8+ Boats to AB Semis, 4+ to Grand Final on Day One at IRA National Championships

GOLD RIVER, Calif. – The Princeton University heavyweight rowing team had a successful opening day at the Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) National Championship Regatta Friday, with all three 8+ boats advancing to the AB semifinals and the 4+ to the Grand Final.

"Today was a positive first step forward for our whole team and we're pleased with the way we got things started," said Head Coach Greg Hughes. "But we all know that it's not how you start a thing, it's how you finish it that matters. We're very excited for the opportunities that our next steps will bring."

The 1V (5:39.360) opened the day with a hard-fought victory in its heat. The Tigers finished ahead of Stanford (5:40.960), Syracuse (5:43.360), Cornell (5:48.030), Navy (5:49.710) and La Salle (5:53.650).

The 2V (5:46.990) likewise delivered a strong performance in its heat and punched a ticket to the A semifinal. Princeton earned the win over Brown (5:49.41), Cornell (5:53.800), Wisconsin (5:56.000), Temple (6:02.920) and UC San Diego (6:15.440).

The 3V (5:54.380) followed suit to make it 3-for-3 heat victories. The Tigers overcame Syracuse (5:56.000), Boston University (5:56.890), Cornell (6:05.160) and Wisconsin (6:10.410) to earn the first-place finish.

In the 4+ time trial, the Tigers (6:15.850) finished sixth and earned a spot in an ABC semifinal. The Tigers (6:34.090) then finished second behind California (6:30.090) to advance to the Grand Final as one of the top two finishing boats.
