June 19, 2006 | Men's Ice Hockey
PRINCETON - A class of 10 - 6 forwards, 3 defensemen and a goaltender - will join the Princeton men's hockey team next season as the Class of 2010. The group, which includes 6 Canadians and 4 Americans, will join a Princeton squad that went 10-18-3 a season ago and has improved its record in each of the past three seasons.
The class is comprised of forwards: Dan Bartlett (Portland, Maine), Tyler Beachell (Rosser, Man.), Cam French (St. Albert, Alb.), Kevin Kaiser (Pelham, N.H.), Cam MacIntyre (Sooke, B.C.), and Mark Magnowski (Winnipeg, Man.); defensemen Kevin Crane (Irvine, Calif.), Jody Pederson (Smithers, B.C.) and Brad Schroeder (Drake, Sask.); and goaltender Zane Kalemba (Saddle Brook, N.J.).
Dan Bartlett
Forward ? 5-10 ? Shoots Right
Portland, Maine ? New Hampshire Jr. Monarchs (EJHL)
Bartlett scored 27 goals and added 43 assists for 70 points in 48 games last season with the EJHL Champion New Hampshire Junior Monarchs. Bartlett captained the championship-winning team and was named to EJHL's All-League and All-Tournament teams. The previous season he had 66 points in 55 games.
"Dan is a gifted offensive player with tremendous vision and a knack for making plays," says Princeton head coach Guy Gadowsky. "He is the type of player that goal scorers want to play with."
Tyler Beachell
Forward ? 6-2 ? Shoots Left
Rosser, Manitoba ? Flin Flon Bombers (SJHL)
Beachell posted 69 points in 53 games last season with the Flin Flon Bombers. He scored 28 goals and added 41 assists. A year earlier, he had 23 goals and 31 assists for 54 points. Beachell was an assistant captain last season and led his team in scoring. He was named to the league's all-star team and the Canadian junior A prospects game. NHL Central Scouting ranked Beachell for the 2006 NHL Entry Draft.
"Tyler is a big body with tremendous hands," says Gadowsky. "He has great vision and always makes offensive plays happen. He will make an immediate impact offensively, and could become a dominant player in the ECAC."
Kevin Crane
Defenseman ? 5-11 ? Shoots Right
Irvine, Calif. ? Phillips Exeter Academy Crane had seven goals and 29 assists for 36 points at Exeter last season. Those numbers made him the point leader among all defensemen in Division I New England Prep Hockey. Crane shared the team's Most Valuable Player Award. Crane has played at four USA Hockey Festivals and won a USA Hockey National Championship in 2003 with the California Wave.
"An incredibly gifted skater, Kevin makes excellent decisions with the puck," says Gadowsky. "He has a knack for making the big play both defensively and offensively. He is deceptively strong and with his great skating ability is difficult to play against defensively. His vision and offensive abilities should make Kevin a strong all-around defenseman.
Cam French
Forward ? 6-3 ? Shoots Right
St. Albert, Alb. ? Drayton Valley Thunder (AJHL)
French had 48 points last season on 18 goals and 30 assists for Drayton Valley. His point total was four more than the 44 he had a season earlier. French won the Thunder's Most Improved Player Award in 2004-05.
"Cam is a power forward," says Gadowsky. "He has good finishing ability and at 6-3 can also cause problems for opposing defensemen in the corners and in front of the net."
Kevin Kaiser
Forward ? 5-9 ? Shoots Right
Pelham, N.H. ? St. Paul's School (ISL)
Kaiser had 30 points on 15 goals and 15 assists as a senior captain last season and he was named all-league. He also won the St. Paul's School's Top Athlete Award. A year earlier, he had 39 points in 26 games and was named all-league as St. Paul's won its first league title in more than 20 years. He also won the team's Coaches Award.
"Kevin brings great work ethic and excellent leadership," says Gadowsky. "He has an excellent shot, and is a relentless checker in the offensive zone and coming back hard to his own end. He will fit in very well with the Princeton system."
Zane Kalemba
Goaltender ? 5-11 ? Catches Left
Saddle Brook, N.J. ? Flin Flon Bombers (SJHL)
Kalemba went 20-29-2 last season with the Flin Flon Bombers. He had a 3.78 goals-against average and a .888 save percentage. Kalemba was chosen the team's Most Valuable Player and won the RBC 3-Stars Award. The previous season he played in the USHL for Green Bay and had a 3.26 goals-against and a .899 save percentage. He played at Hotchkiss prior to his two seasons of junior hockey.
"Zane is very experienced, playing Junior hockey in both Canada and the United States," says Gadowsky. He has also represented the US in international competition. He is mentally tough, and gives his team confidence with his unflappable attitude."
Cam MacIntyre
Forward ? 6-1 ? Shoots Right
Sooke, B.C. ? Salmon Arm Silverbacks (BCHL)
MacIntyre combined for 75 points last season split between the Cowichan Capitals and the Salmon Arm Silverbacks. For the season he had 41 goals and 34 assists in 60 games. He was a first-team all-star and captained the BCHL Coast Conference all stars. MacInyre was the captain of Cawichan before being traded and also captained the team in the previous season. That year he won the team's Coaches Award and was the team's Scholastic Player of the Year.
"Cam will immediately be one of the top power forwards in the league," says Gadowsky. "He is extremely strong and uses his body in a very physical manner. One of the top goal scorers in the BCHL, he was a captain in the All-Star game and is one of the most respected leaders in Canadian Junior hockey."
Mark Magnowski
Forward ? 5-10 ? Shoots Left
Winnipeg, Manitoba ? Sioux Falls Stampede (USHL)
Magnowski captained his team in Sioux Falls last season as he posted 63 points in 73 games on 27 goals and 36 assists. He was selected to play in the USHL All-Star game. Magnowski played for Green Bay in the USHL the previous season and had 32 points in 60 games.
"Mark is an extremely intelligent player both defensively and offensively," says Gadowsky. "He can finish, as well as make great plays. He will be counted on immediately to make an impact in both ends of the ice."
Jody Pederson
Defenseman ? 6-3 ? Shoots Left
Smithers, B.C. ? Fort McMurray Oil Barrons (AJHL)
Pederson had 24 points (six goals and 18 assists) in 54 games as a member of the defensive corps for Fort McMurray last season, as he helped lead the team to a league championship. Pederson played the previous season for the Olds Grizzleys and had 24 points. He was an assistant captain on that team and won the team's award for the best defenseman. He was also named to the South Division's All-Star team that year.
"Jody brings a combination of size and puck moving ability to our blue line," says Gadowsky. "He has good vision and excellent offensive skills wrapped in a 6-4 body. His long reach and instincts for the game make him excellent at defending against the rush."
Brad Schroeder
Defenseman ? 6-3 ? Shoots Right
Drake, Sask. ? Humboldt Broncos (SJHL)
Schroeder scored four goals and added 13 assists for 17 points in his third season on the Humboldt blueline. A season earlier, Schroeder had 18 points. That season he won the Hockey Ministries International Roger Neilson Award, presented annually to a SJHL player who displays an attitude of sportsmanship on and off the ice, who displays leadership qualities in the locker room and in game situations and a player who consistently chooses to make positive lifestyle choices.
"Brad has a big body with a strong defensive mentality," says Gadowsky. "With the help of the Princeton Strength Coaches and added size to his 6-3 frame, Brad could be a dominant defensive player for Princeton."
