June 20, 2006 | Women's Soccer
PRINCETON, N.J. - Several current, past and future Princeton women's soccer players are competing this summer throughout the northeast and Canada as part of the United Soccer League's "W-League" or the Women's Premier Soccer League (WPSL). One alumna, five returning players and two incoming freshmen can be found on the rosters of seven teams.
The W-League has nearly 40 teams spread across the country. It plays a two-month season that started in late May. A schedule can be found here.
Diana Matheson, a 2006 captain and 2004 first-team All-American in the midfield, is suiting up for the Ottawa Fury of the W-League before training with the Canadian National Team for the 2007 World Cup qualifying rounds. Incoming freshman forward Marci Pasenello is also sticking close to her hometown in upstate New York, competing for the W-League's Rochester Rhinos.
Closest to Princeton, 2005 alumna Esmeralda Negron, the leading scorer in school history, a two-time All-America and two-time Ivy League Player of the year, is playing for the W-League's New Jersey Wildcats, who contest their home games at Mercer County Park just a few miles from campus. Negron has also participated in the U.S. National Team process. Fellow alumna Kelly Sosa '03 is suiting up for the W-League's Western Massaschusetts Pioneers.
Forward Allison Williams and goalkeeper Maren Dale, both returning to the 2006 Princeton team, are playing for the WPSL's Philadelphia Pirates, who play
their home games at the United Sports Training Center in Downington, Pa. The WPSL also has nearly 40 teams across the U.S. and started pay in mid-May,
wrapping up in mid-July.
