Princeton Sends Six to Under-23 World Rowing Championships
August 02, 2006 | Heavyweight Rowing, Women's Rowing - Open, Men's Rowing - Lightweight
The six Princeton rowers to compete during the August 21-23 competition were Darby (U.S. women's 8+), Stone (U.S. women's 8+), Katrina Weschelburger (Canadian women's 4-), Will England (U.S. men's 8+), Alex Hearne (U.S. men's 8+) and Greg McKallagat (U.S. men's lightweight 4-).
Darby and Stone helped lead the U.S. to gold in a time of 6:06.68. Belarus came in second in 6:08.98, while Germany took the bronze in 6:09.97. For Darby and Stone, it builds on the incredible spring of racing; they were part of the Ivy, Eastern and national champion Princeton open crew, which never lost a race during the season.
England and Hearne also both experienced successful springs, as they led Princeton to the 2006 Eastern and Ivy League title and a silver medal at the IRA national championships. They helped the U.S. to the grand final in the men's 8+, where it finished fifth in a time of 5:36.56. Canada won the event in 5:30.72, edging both Germany and Italy.
Weschelburger also helped her boat reach a grand final, as the Canadian 4 finished sixth in a time of 6:51.90. McKallagat's U.S. lightweight 4 was unable to reach the grand final, but the boat rallied for an exciting win in the petite final. Its time of 6:06.11 topped Switzerland by .2 of a second.
