Men's Soccer Opens Ivy League Season With Visit to Yale
September 22, 2006 | Men's Soccer
After 11 years in a row where Yale has been Princeton's last Ivy opponent of each season in men's soccer, the Bulldogs will be Princeton's first league test in 2006.
The Tigers hope to have just as solid a start to Ivy League play as they have in their first seven games overall when they visit the Bulldogs Saturday afternoon at 4:30 for the opener of a men's/women's doubleheader between the two schools.
Princeton (3-2-2) is really just a few inches away from starting its season with just one loss, to nationally-ranked FDU, in its first seven games. Yale (3-3-1) earned its biggest win of the season so far on Wednesday, defeating that same FDU squad 2-1 on a late penalty-kick goal.
The Tigers open their Ivy League season by playing their first three league games against the three tri-champions of the league in 2005. After Saturday's game, the Tigers will host Dartmouth next weekend and Brown Oct. 7.
Head coach Jim Barlow and the Tigers nearly had a big win at Rutgers Wednesday night, but the Scarlet Knights' Adam Sternberger scored on a header late in the first overtime to give his team a 1-0 victory. Princeton had a pair of chances in the overtime, including a long Devin Muntz' shot that was saved with dive over the crossbar.
Gage Hills, who scored the game winner for Yale in last season's 1-0 win at Princeton, has scored five of Yale's nine goals this season, including the penalty kick that defeated FDU Wednesday. Dan Cummins leads the Tigers with three goals this season.
Princeton has lost three straight against the Bulldogs. The Tigers 3-2-2 start through seven games is their best start to a season since the 2001 Ivy championship season, when they had an identical 3-2-2 mark through seven games.
