Sprint Football Falls to Cornell in Opener, 29-0
September 22, 2006 | Sprint Football
PRINCETON, N.J. -- Tom Cocuzza's debut as the head coach of the Princeton sprint football team didn't go as he would have liked. The Tigers were shut out in their opening game at Princeton Stadium by Cornell (2-0) Friday night, falling 29-0.
Princeton was unable to get the offense going and wasn't helped by three interceptions from quarterback Alex Kandabarow, one of which was returned for Cornell's third touchdown of the first half.
While the Cornell passing attack was efficient, connecting on 15 of 22 attempts for 180 yards, Princeton was 16 for 54 for 128 yards, totaling 121 yards of offense after just 11 rush attempts netted -7 yards. Lon Johnson led Princeton with four catches for 63 yards.
Michael Fullowan caught a 66-yard touchdown pass from Zak Dentes for the Big Red's first score four minutes into the game. Jason Zittel added a 31-yard field goal and Jason Remillard hooked up with Dentes for a 35-yard TD pass that gave the Big Red a 16-0 lead after the first quarter.
Rob Napolitano's 39-yard interception return for a touchdown was Cornell's last score of the half with 8:06 left in the second quarter, putting the visitors up 23-0.
Dentes earned his third touchdown pass of the game by connecting with John Rossman for a one-yard toss midway through the third quarter. The extra point snap was mishandled, so Cornell netted six points for a 29-0 lead.
The Tigers are back in Princeton Stadium next Friday at 7 p.m. against Penn.
